You'll be able to tell by the fibrous cap, and black veil remnants that look like stringy fibers down the stipe.
Gumby wrote a excellent guide that i recommend you read, search posts to find it, im to lazy to find the post.

The white man can never win another war on the ground. His days of war, victory, his reign -- his days of ground victory are over. Can I prove it? Yes. Take all the action that's going on this earth right now that he's involved in -- tell me where he's winning. Nowhere.
Why some rice farmers -- some rice eaters ran him out of Korea. Yes, they ran him out of Korea. Rice eaters with nothing but gym shoes, and a rifle, and a bowl of rice took him and his tanks and his napalm, and all that other action he's supposed to have and ran him across the Yalu. Why? 'Cause the day that he can win on the ground has passed.

Grats, Weilii Nelson! Awesome pics and one hell of a fine! mastchacheef
Thanks mastchacheef, really means alot coming from ya. I know you used to, or still pick these in good #'s. But lets not forget the true master pickers of Weilii; Lizard King, Gumby, yourself, and several others of course.

Do you think Fairmount, south west Pickens county extreme north west Cherokee county is to far north to find a P. weilii? sprout70
sprout, check some old posts made by shroomerjohn, he used to pick in the Canton area, which is pretty close to Pickens county. He had great success.
Also, to finally put an end to the debate of whether Weilii are a Woodloving mushroom or not, Here is a picture of a couple Weilii growing straight off of decaying wood. You can even see the mycelium growing all over the wood. This picture can not be disputed. Weilii are woodloving mushrooms.

Weilii are a lignicolous species, that means they love wood when neighborhoods are built large amounts of wood debris get pushed into the soil by construction equipment and thats why they are seen in lawns.

exactly what i think sometimes ago , and i found some in a sawmille , like a wood lover will do but because i really think they could grow there , so this second decomposer can act as primary or secondary sometimes as the all other woodlover are primary decomposer but sometimes can be secondary decomposer as ps cyanescens.
this thread is amazing , so much weillii around there , make wonder in more way to acclimatised villarealae . the same thing happend here but in disturbed areas of the forest, buried wood , in all psilocybes really that why i always look for the indicative species , and all are woodlover when i see then i know it can be a potencial place for villarealae.
congratulations to the red crayon, are you the oldest weilli hunter around?, to weilliii, and to others weillii hunters.

Certainly not, im just a guy who has followed em around, and studied em a bit, phish, lizard king, and tons others in the past were true masters, but it doesnt really matter who picks what or what ever ego thing. As long as people enjoy documenting such a obscure species, and following a hobby, but also advancing science, who know, maybe some obscure mushroom in a remote area never discoved may hold the cure for cancer. Scientists and pickers need to get togther.
Sorry for the rant though...

These particular finds were in a deeply wooded area. Extremely hard to get to. Here are the pics.
If you notice on this one, there is a Timber Rattle Snake on the right hand side "guarding" the massive Weilii just to the left. It probably would of got me, but I just happened to notice it as I was about to pick the Weilii.

Another Pic as he slithers away, bad ass animal indeed.

Some of these pics didn't turn out so well....

A forest of Velutina's, always a good sign.
