Hey, I wanna buy a new method of transpo. I've been considering a street legal dirtbike in the 250 range. 99% of the time will be on road travel, around 10 miles a day.
I know 250cc is a "small" bike. I don't wanna get anything bigger than 400. Please don't tell me that I'll outgrow a bike that size or that it isn't good for highway travel. Don't plan on doing that anyway.
Right now, I have a 150 scooter and I don't want or need a big bike. Just something I can scoot to work on and maybe take the dirt cut throughs on the way home. Sooooo honda? yamaha? any input? I wanna keep cost to around $1000 so old and used is totally in my future. Thanks all!

??? 250CC 2 cycle or 250cc four stroke. i have YZ426F but its clearly not street legal. its sick on the tracks tho i havent done that in years. i hope to break it out this summer and hit some sweet jumps and trail.
people find it hard to believe i ride a dirt bike and also that i was a harsh authoritarian person. its funny the how deluded people can get about me and my vastness
oh yeah i dont know much about the street legal ones but i would say get a yamaha and unless you get used one its gona cost more then 1k my 426 used was like 2k

I got a bud with a couple different Enduro's of different ages. They all kick ass.
Lots of people love the old yami Rd's too. I don't really know how old you wanna go,but cl350's are fantastic bikes. it's really a road cb,but with high pipes and knobbys.
you can pick up all kinds of 70's Jap twins for under a grand. nearly all could be used as a "dual sport".
I'd try to keep away from 2 strokes though. People will hate you,and they just have to follow the trail of smoke to run you down.

yeah i have to agree about 2 cycle it cost more money too specially to maintain. i have a YZ125 too its funn tho but not like my YZ426F i will also say go for the new for 450 racing bikes if your getting a racing bike those romp i might sell mine and get one of those.
get like TW200 or XT250 but an older model cause new ones run 5k or so
ha ha the changed the gear ratios on the 450 so its less scary lots of people are afraid of my bike cause its strange power. you can wheelie in 3rd gear by pinning the throttle which is uncommon. Its top end speed is so fast and it gets there pretty quick

I rode one for years. Used it the same as you plan to, mainly for transportation to and from work with an occasional ride on the weekends. I had a Kawasaki KLR250. I loved that bike!

I've been recently thinking about getting another KLR. But this time I'm gonna buy the 650 instead of the 250 because I want tot take some weekend trips on it and the 250 was no good for highway travel. But if you are just looking for around town commuting and some trail rides a 250 will serve you well.
Heres the '08 Kawasaki KLR650 that I've been contemplating....
