Shroomery address book.

Hey, I was wondering whether it would be possible to create a Shroomery address book? I don't mean the one that already exists, being the drop down box with a list of names in it. I was thinking more along the lines of being able to add contact/address details to each name to make repeated trades and the such easier.
Feedback and comments are encouraged.
Thanks all.

That's not a bad idea but the main thing would be privacy concerns. As you describe it we'd be storing peoples' contact information without their consent, and it could be vulnerable to hacking attempts or legal action. I can envision some sort of system where users enter their own contact information and it's encrypted on the server, and they can authorize certain users to view it by providing the key. But that's waaay a lot of work for something you can kind of do already. Just ask people to send you their contact info via secure PM, then make a folder called 'Addresses' and move the messages there. It's (relatively) safe, still pretty convenient, and most importantly it won't take me like 20 hours to code.

Yeah, fair enough. Good points about the privacy concerns and hacking attempts. It's a slight bother to have address actually offsite, in a folder on a computer, but I suppose not nearly as bothersome as 20 hours of code-writing.
Well, I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
Thanks for the response.

Well I actually meant a folder in your PM inbox, a lot of people never notice this functionality but you can create your own folders and move messages between them for organizational purposes. If you go to your PM inbox and scroll down to the bottom, there's a 'Folder' drop-down menu with a 'New Folder' option. So you could make one for addresses and store them there. It doesn't completely eliminate privacy concerns, but if the address is sent in a secure PM it should be pretty safe.

Is there any way to make messages editable? i know that could be used for shady reasons or doctoring what you said to make it look like you said something else... but what about this...
Notes you can edit and add to the end of your messages...
so it would be like
----------- From implee to implee Message: Sup duuuude OMGSH CUBES R AwESOME
Notes: This nigga lives in houston texas -----------
----------- From implee to implee Message: Info on forum buddies
Notes: Curecat has boobz so shes hawt
Ythan has penor so hes hawt
Mjshroomer loves children and thats hawt -----------
i dont know how many people would put notes on their pm's though... but theres no other secure place to put infos on here... The journals are public only right?
we would be able to send ourselves secure PM's named addresses(or whatever) and we could keep that shit updated under the notes instead of having to update by copy/pasting text to a new pm then sending to ourselves then moving it to the infos folder every time
Probably not worth it though... Are there private journal entries for storing private info? I like the idea of storing private info in encrypted messages better though.

Or you can make editing ONLY apply to messages sent to yourself instead of global notes on every PM that might be easier

Well sure, just enter this in your address bar and edit to your heart's content!
Code:
javascript:document.body.contentEditable='true'; document.designMode='on'; void 0
Oh wait you want to save the edit too? Damn you guys are demanding!
It would be possible, but is this really something you think you would use frequently? And does anyone else have a use for this?

Yeah I think most people would be really worried about privacy concerns.. I mean it's a good idea and all but it seems waaaay too risky to have someones private address and info saved on the server. Seems like too big a risk for something you could just take like 5 extra seconds for and save their info somewhere else.. not worth the risk IMO.

this is some funny shit.
On a more serious note. Being able to have an address book that is more advanced seems good. My inbox is a damn mess with all the messages coming though and its a PITA to get my key to work for secure messages.

Even if we offered address book functionality it would not eliminate the need for keys I'm afraid. At least if we want to be secure about it. I'll keep thinking about a good way to add this, but what about my suggestion for making a folder just to store addresses and moving the relevant PMs there? Then it's up to the user if they want to encrypt or if they're comfortable sending in plaintext.

That seems like an alright idea but I would rather it be a seperate function from the PMs becuase I get them all mixed up and my trade ratings have suffered because of that.

I still don't understand why creating a dedicated folder for addresses (or all trade related PMs) wouldn't address this problem.
Not trying to be difficult but unless I know why the existing solution isn't sufficient I can't improve upon it.

That make you fell better about yourself being an internet tough guy?
We traded, your end of the deal was not fulfilled, I used the rating system as it should be used, you my friend are upset and don't have anything else to do with your time, your a nu sense at best.
People like yourself are the only bad thing about this community.
Where'd it go?
In with the address book there should be a couple bullets like in the polls. You can click under someones user name that you have added and cllick wether you are waiting for their end of the trade, or if they have sent you any new messages or they gave a rating for recieving their end of the deal.
This would all be the users responsibility to click the right bullets. Once the trade is done and you click "trade completed" then their address is deleted from the temp location.
eh?

Heh well damn you're envisioning a whole transaction management system like eBay. Again not a bad idea but it would take some doing, I'll see what I can come up with.

I think creating a folder for address is fine, I was unaware of the function before. However, I'm curious as to how having an advanced address book with peoples details in it is any more of a privacy issue than having those same details scattered throughout PMs in an inbox?

Assuming the address book is encrypted, it wouldn't be more of a privacy issue. Integrating with GPG (the encryption software) is a little labor-intensive, which is why I don't want to duplicate the secure PM functionality if it's not necessary. But hey we're in a recession, I could probably use the hours. I'll try to come up with something which meets the requirements mentioned in this thread.

Thanks very much Ythan, you're incredible. I'll leave that addresses folder option for a while then.
