linux distros wont work?
    #8619982 - 07/10/08 10:49 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

first i tried linux MCE teh 32 bit would not work pci error it said.
Mint just stalled and just sayed "ready"
linux MCE 64 bit would load run teh wizard adn then when it started its UI for teh media center would go to command line. based on kubuntu.
straight kubuntu did not work either...
motehrbord asus m2a x2  using the built in DVI.

oh this was attempted on a new 750 gb hard drive. i hooked it up to my pc as a second to hard drive first showed as 750 connection was sketchy bad sata cable tried to reformat. tried to reformat again but only came up as 298 gb harddrive like the one previously hooked up even after a reboot. after format as  298 gb drive linux still would not work....

any ideas? faulty HDD? incompatible MB?

Sounds like faulty hardware.  (I'm assuming you know what you are doing based upon the text of your post.)  Check to see if the HDD manufacturer has a test utility that you can download to test the disk.  Your 'bad SATA cable' might have been something else, such as a bad drive or a bad controller, or you might have two bad cables in a row (especially if they came off the factory line one after another).

If you have your old HDD try it. I have never had a problem getting Linux on a system except for when people want to fucking dualboot with windows, and the bootloader goes crazy. Fuck windows. If the old HDD works then you know that it isn't that, and its something else. If its giving you PCI errors then...What do you have installed in your PCI slots?

Try the new ubuntu...If it doesn't work something is going on in there. It has been pretty user friendly thus far.

the cable was just a crap one that came with this multi hard drive attachment  thing with USB interface.

windows runs fine so would that be the controller still?  im thinking it is the hard drive aswell. it was a samsung ill look into the test. and even windows disk test would not run on it now that i checked.  thanks for your help. ill prob just take the disk back and spend a couple more bucks on a seagate. are faulty drives more common in larger capacity ones?

Sounds like the drive. Try Kubuntu(I say this just cause I know it works well with a dualboot) with the GRUB bootloader. Try to partition your HDD that has the windows partition on it, and dualboot it from there. This will help to eliminate the bad HDD or any faulty cables. A Linux install will only take up 2-3 GB to run well. Does the HDD show up in the BIOS? Or in my computer when you get to windows?
