Orange Russula?
    #8618955 - 07/10/08 09:18 PM (4 years, 10 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Riparian forest mycorrhizal with White Ash, MW USA 41 latitude What does it grow on? Forest floor.

Gills:
White becoming cream, attached gills, close.

Stem:
5 cm long, 1.5 cm thick, white, smooth, hollow at maturity.

Cap:
6.5 cm, orange with reddish tones, dry, plane, slightly centrally depressed.

Spore print color:
None taken, I assume white to cream.

Bruising:
None apparent.

Other information:
Smelled like carbon monoxide.

I checked around for an orange Russula, but all I came up with was Russula paludosa.  Paludosa means "swampy" and these weren't in a swamp AND they aren't mycorrhizal with conifers (Russula paludosa is).

I know Russula taxonomy is a mess, but has anyone seen anything like this?

Well, here's the thing, Danny.  There were three tree species in the area, Black Cherry, Maple and the White Ash.  I didn't remember White Ash, Fraxinus americana, being mycorrhizal at all.  I was wrong AND there is some species that grows exclusively with it.

However....there were tons of mycorrhizal mushrooms growing in the area with it: Cantharellus appalachiensis, Russula virescens, Amanita sp., Boletus sp., Tylopilus sp., Cantharellus cibarius and a few odds and ends.

What the hell is that about?

I mean I combed the Internet looking at websites, message board, resources like mushroomexpert and Tom Volk.  The only Orange Russula I found was at Kuo's mushroom expert and he was apologizing for posting a pic of the orange form!

I didn't check the pileus for bruising, taste or color of the context because this mushroom is like 5 minutes from my house.  I figured, "Hey, they're orange.  How many orange Russulas can there be?"  Well, according to an Internet search, just one and this one ain't it unless someone doesn't have all their facts straight.

I always heard the Shroomery identifiers were the "best of the best of the best, SIR!"  Guess I heard wrong.

Black Cherry, Maple and the White Ash

There's a Hickory nut under the russula.

Good eyes, Falcon, but the tree was either dead, which I doubt, or the nut was carried in by an animal.  There are zero Hickories in that area.  I've been hunting it for 18 years and it is only about 2 acres.

I can come up with 5 species your Russula could be:

R. aurantiolutea
R. claroflava
R. fulvescens
R. xantho
R. lutea

While orange is not necessarily a normal cap color for some of those, it is within the range of cap colors for all of them. Unfortunately, cap colors in Russulas vary according to the age of the specimen and how much sunlight it has received.

Without a microscope, the only one of those you'll be able to separate is R. aurantiolutea, which is the only one of those species with an acrid flavor. The others are all mild.

To separate all of those species you'll need to measure the spores and spore ornamentation as well as noting the reactions of the gill and pileus cystidia to sulfovanillin.

Happy mushrooming!

Thank you, Captain Russula!

Now, I know you don't post much, but if it isn't too much trouble can you explain, in brief to us n00bies, what resources you used to reach those species?

(crosses fingers)

I think there is a generic one, but I would want something more specific--like a monograph.

Oh yeah, do you have a link to it?

Perhaps we could update it then with any new resources anyone comes across?

That's a great idea, Trip.  I can't seem to find the link to the resources but I am fairly certain I saw them.
