BRF Lids vs Grain Lids vs LC Lids
    #8609339 - 07/08/08 06:23 PM (3 months, 3 days ago)

Ok, I'm confused about Lids.

I've done searches on lid teks, lid, grain lid, etc...read, and read and read. Such differing styles, yet, no consensus.

Links for reference:
homemade lids that have stood the test of time
My Tyvek Lid Tek
Best Lid Tek: Polyfil or Tyvek
Lids that Don't Leak
All very good teks. Yet reading all the comments, feedback + the blatant differences, leaves me, a nOOb, scratching his head for what type of lid to use where and when.

For example, I recently posted a question about LC needing FAE and was informed that yes, indeed LC did need FAE. Yet I read that some LC lids are single hole, with beads of silicone on both sides, filling the hole. Where's the FAE there? I love the no spill, yet there is a vacuum created that will suck your syringe dry.

Another example, if using a square tyvek piece to cover the entire lid, does the tyvek go on the bottom of the lid, thus touching the spawn, or does the tyvek go on top of the lid, if so how do you quickly/accurately hit your mark when inoculating? and either way, should the rubber side be up or down on the lid?

Also, I get have the opinion after reading all these tyvek teks, that tyvek is self healing as you can inject right thru it. Huh? It leaves a big stinkin' hole big enough for any contaminate to pass thru...so...

just bought some new lids, have all the ingredients (cept those store bought self-healing ports) to make my own.

So, what's the best lid for BRF? (I watched all of RR's videos and that seems to be a solid answer as I have followed the PF tek to the letter and so far so good)

what's the best lid for grains?
what's the best lid for LC?
what's the best lid for small Agar jars?

Maybe the answer is out there, but scattered all over 100, 6+ page posts...hope you empathize with me.

Thanks in advance!

My grain lids were just the lids with a hole punched in the middle so I knew where to inoculate through without fumbling around

My lc is in bottles with no exchange whatsoever(Please see not only my tek but also my pics under "Growing")to see that it works

Cant tell ya anything about agar lids, every time I tried agar I grew every color of the rainbow EXCEPT white

Okay, air exchange as I understand it is vital for something like grains or pf cakes but not so much for things like LC's. In your LC you're going to have mycelium pretty much everywhere but it's density will vary depending upon how much oxygen it has to grow. You want air exchange for grains and cakes cause you want them to finish completely whereas if your LC doesn't "finish" you'd never know.

needle in a haystack...no consensus...thanks BrandNewbie :smirk:

plus, didn't see a single lid tek in that list...am I blind? or do I have to read every grain/lc tek to again, read all the variations of lids...I'm just gonna throw a dart at one of the lid teks 'I' posted above and go with it. I was hoping my confusion would help someone else's confusion.

checking them out now. Don't think I've ran across these threads yet...

Thank you Blood4blood!!!

[EDIT}on second glance, I have read the first link blood4blood, several times. Guess I'll order some ports and synthetic filter discs. It's just that I have plenty of tyvek, silicone, and polyfil. The silicone works great for a self healing port. My questions (with tyvek/polyfill) still remain. Does it matter if the tyvek is between the jar and the lid or between the lid and the screw ring? I mean, I think anyway you slice it, when you shake your grain, or shake your LC you will make contact with the filter in someway, regardless of whether it's tyvek/polyfill or synthetic disk.

Thanks again for a straighter path!

When you are pc'ing your lc medium don't put the lid seal down and don't tighten the lid down. thats where the vacuum is coming from. I have found that if you have a vacuum the culture will not grow. I have done this several times to see  and that what would happen. No growth from those jars and growth in the ones with no vacuum.  I have some extra gray rubber injection ports if you want a few i'll give them to you.

I'm flattered Robenaro...sent you a PM.

Yes, I have been watching my first LC for 7 days now, do absolutely nothing for 7 days...it's all vacuumed up. Thank you for confirming that. I was thinking that's all I would need to do, is to turn the lid rubber side up. I'm just so paranoid about contams...as I should be, right?
