Might keep an eye out for those coprinus atramentarius, they sound tasty. Found some huge juicy feild mushrooms the other day, in the frypan on toast mmmm.
Hi Polantis, were u referring to A. arvensis, the horse mushroom? I have only seen and tasted one many years ago when I found it up in the dandenong ranges on a nature strip. Too bad I didn't know cloning then. I am looking for one to clone and grow. It is much bigger than the mushroom caps you find at the supermarket. Much firmer and sweeter. In terms of taste and size and texture, I rank it together with the Elm oyster mushroom, Hypsizygus ulmarius. Maybe even better. Or were u referring to the smaller, more common field mushrooms?
By the way, Japanese snow cap, a kind of oyster, is in season now. Imported from Japan. I saw it at Prahran Market. They were going for $150/kg. I didn't get that. Not enough money. But I did get some chanterelle and fairy ring mushrooms. Both imported from France. Both also going for $150/kg.

Yeh jus the 'you'll love coles' feild shroom lol. Was so much better than what u buy at the supermarket. I'm looking for any edible's now!!
150$ a kilo, wow thats some expensive shrooms!! Wanna taste good!
Found a mushroom book for sale for $5 at a 2ndhand shop and bought that but it's mainly covering US shrooms. Know of any links or books for edible Australian shrooms?

Those that i got tasted quite mild. But I was told the Jap snow cap tastes like fish. Hmmm I should go back and get one to try.
Some years ago, they also imported different truffles from europe. The cheapest one was $2000/kg, mid range: $4000/kg and the top ones: $6000/kg. I should have got one to try. Now can't get any. Maybe they will have it again near Christmas.

With coprinus other than C. commatus, it is advisable no alcohol 24 hr before and after as it can cause an allergy reaction.

A mush tasting like fish...now thats different. I heard their trying to grow truffles in Victoria somewhere. My friend (a chef) is trying to source some, I'd love to give one a try. The closest i've got is truffle oil lol.

I know truffles are being grown in Tas and NZ. 2 years ago, my friend told me one veg shop at Victoria Garden in Richmond also had truffles. But when I got there, already sold out

Frankly, spore water is more of a hit and miss. A surer way is to pull the whole damn thing out, cut and save the mushroom, and bury the base in new woodchips. Even surer way is get grain spawn and bury them in woodchips. A guranteed way is to grow your own. I know pulling sounds horrible, but I don't think many people realise that the woodchips the current mushrooms are growing on can be exhausted if not replenished by the council. If not replenished, the patch will go anyhow.
Thanks for the tip! I'll try it out

Cute and Pol ?

On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice.

Hey guys, well done keeping such a great message board. I've never tried any mushies, and am keen to give them a go. I went on a bit of a walk yesterday north of melbourne and came across a few that I'd like a bit of help IDing. My pics aren't too great, but I'll give you the best info I can. I don't intend to eat these, as they're just a starter... but I plan to go for a proper hunt on the weekend and want to know if I'm on the right track, and to know what to avoid. Excuse my chronic n00bity
I found 2 types of mushy that were almost identical
Habitat- in mossy undergrowth amongst native vegetation
Gills- fairly close together I guess, thin and fragile. One type has plain white/cream gills, the other had blue-greenish sort of colour which is now more a dirty blue
cap- Golden brown, caramelly. Since yesterday they've gone darker, but they didn't necessarily bruise within the first few minutes of picking
Spore print- The darker gilled ones have a dark purple spore print, and the lighter ones either didn't drop spores, or are just white
Bruising- As I said, they didn't really bruise straight away, but have turned darker over about 28 hours
Location- North of Melb, mountains
here's some pics

(The top 2 are the lighter coloured ones, which I don't think are subs, though they look exactly the same from above)
 Spore Print
Subs on bottom? Something else above?
Cheers for your help

Hey xk3m-indica , thought I' help you out by putting some pics up in this bitch... On my walk I spotted these Amanitas from a far distance they were soooo birght, they were the finest Amanitas I have seen this season...
This was a fine sub, one of those ones you dont want to hurt HAHAHAH On my walk this was the most interesting of all, would be great if someone recognises it! Definatley not an Aminita as it had no veil on the stipe and no reminence of the veil left on te cap. The fungi was mature almost before it had penetrated the pine needle debre. Im thinking maybe of the genus Russula as the colour was almost flourecent, but im not sure...

so... nothing active there. Is that due to the fact that they didn't really bruise as I'd hope they would? I've tried to look over as many pages as I could, but in terms of identifying characteristics, why aren't these active? I know it's only my second post, but I'm not just blowing in trying to get mashed for the weekend, I am very interested in learning as much as I can about identification.

Nah not the fact that they don't bruise blue. The bottom ones look like stropharia aurantiaca. Not sure about the others but they're not active. Have a good look over this thread and the past few years and you should learn quite abit and have a good idea what to look for. Probably best to post your finds up here before eating anything to be safe though.

Hi orphbag, You will know exactly when you find a sub, most of the time you can see the blueing before you even pick it... Those rusty brown sporeprints are the scary ones and lucky you didnt eat them... P.subs have a caramel coloured cap, ive found the gill colour can vary with age of the mushroom from cream to dark purple/brown. The spore print is dark purple brown and the stem is white and will bruise blue where you have handled it as does the whole mushroom...hope this helps, keep reading and hunting and it will all come together...
