Storing Venom
    #8588827 - 07/02/08 06:55 PM (2 months, 3 days ago)

I am neither advanced, nor a mycologist but I have read enough on snake venom crosses to have an unanswered question.

First, I have some experience catching venomous snakes but not milking them. However, I expect more difficulty storing the fresh venom than actually milking the damn thing!

Snake venom is said to be unstable and the only way to store it, (that I can find) is to freeze dry it.  Thats an expensive route and liquid nitorgen isnt all that common around here.

With all the different teks for growing and preserving mushrooms, where are the alternative snake venom teks?

Can I purify and store it somehow? Use it straight from the fang?

ANYTHING?

Or is freezedrying to a powder the only way to go?

I am trying to cross two difficult species, but may spend my energy developing an alternative venom tek if one doesnt surface soon.

Thanks everyone.

i have been maintaining a collection of various species of venomous reptiles for years and have have extensive experience handling them. I still have never attempted something as risky as milking them. I feel that unless you are in a laboratory setting with quick access to the anti-venom of the species you are handling and a physician that knows how to properly administer it and keep you alive till it works, you SHOULD NOT attempt to milk a venomous snake. A lot of amateur herpetologists have died attempting to milk snakes. And that just leads to further legislation putting stricter regulations people who enjoy keeping snakes.

They get milked in a sterile lab, and then the product is freeze dried and stored at -20C or below.  It's obtainable from sigma scientific, but once you clear the background checks and get authorized to buy it, the stuff is about twice the street price of cocaine.  It does work though.

Look into the Salicyclic acid and Nicotinic acid methods.  I believe PMenace has a thread around on these topics.  Much easier to obtain, cheaper by far and safer- the only thing is, can they be made to work for what you want them to do.

For your own sake, and if I really wanted to do this on my own, please work in a space that carries out this kind of thing. Get some experience, or RR's suggestion works as well.

I have experience with catching and milking venomous snakes (for a pic of a Russell's Viper i just caught look in hunting in a post from India), and even though they are not too far from each other in terms of handling experience, it does take some decent equipment and having some apprenticeship specifically with milking.

One worth studying. (away from snakes if at all possible.)

I'll definitely try Salicyclic acid and Nicotinic acid first.

Thanks everybody

I say use it fresh :P
If you have no problem catching them and if you REALLY KNOW how to milk them there would be no prob.

it is extremely difficult and dangerous to milk a venomous snake properly. Please do not attempt it. not only would you be doing the mycology a disservice by getting accidentally envenomated. you would contribute to the further regulation of the herpetology's hobbyist that maintain venomous collections.

Additional comment:  You don't want to hurt your slithery friend either by improperly opening its mouth and milking it.  Trauma also forgot to mention the number of snakes injured or killed by amateurs trying to milk them.  :frown:

It always amazes me just how fast venoms work.  And while it's not incredibly "humane", at least it's fast.  Incredible stuff.

Be careful, be safe and good luck.

there is no commercial store where you can purchase snake venom. your best bet is to contact the Miami Dade Venom Bank. You are going to be required to undergo a federal backround check, and jump through hoops in order to get it. And on top of it, depending on what kind of venom you are looking for it is going to cost alot. *between $400 and $15,000 a gram* good luck.

Sigma Scientific in St Louis, MO has it also, but the same checks apply and it's awfully expensive.  I went through a few grams with little to show, but the problem is you're spending a few hundred bucks per gram while you go through the learning curve, ruining a few batches.
