Personal first: I got mushroom poisoning.
    #8597546 - 07/05/08 01:12 PM (3 years, 10 months ago)

I've always wanted to try Lactarius fragilis but there were never enough of them around.  This year was a bumper crop and I couldn't wait to try them.  For those that don't know, Lactarius fragilis smells like and tastes like Maple Syrup!  Nummo!

However, it's a little tricky to identify and there are some Galerinas sp. that are very similar.  Newbie hunters shouldn't try them until they get proficient at identifying.

These were classic Lactarius fragilis.  Most importantly, they had a little latex when I scraped the gills.

So I cooked them up with Bob Evans sausage, added some splenda to the sauteed mushrooms and enjoyed one of the most delicious mushroom meals in a long time.

Three hours later I puked my guts up!

I forgot about the part where David Arora says "A few poor souls, alas, some individuals are allergic to them."  My girlfriend got sick too, but her folks were fine.

Guess I won't be eating anymore Maple Syrup mushrooms (common name is Candy Cap).

Are you absolutely they were actually L. fragilis and not one of the many similar species like L. subserifluus, L. camphoratus?

Sorry to hear you we sickened... I'm not looking forward to the almost inevitable poor reaction to something.

What part of the country do you live in anyway?

Are you sure that is Lactarius fragilis?  Looks a bit off to me.

The caps and stems on yours seem too thick and meaty to be L. fragilis, and a little bit too light in color.

See if you can collect some more and check the spore print color and latex color and see if the latex changes after a bit.

How do they taste raw?  Chew one for a minute and see if any hint of peppery comes out.  Some of them are only peppery after chewing on them for about 40 seconds.

Is the cap reticulate at all?  What shape are the spores?

Actually they look ok for the eastern version but are you sure they have them that far north?  MD says they are in the south east.

Seems kind of unlikely that both you and your wife are allergic to them, could be though.

I guess there are some species that have the candy cap aroma but also have the peppery stuff that causes GI distress in some people, though many aren't bothered by that toxin.

I'll try to answer this as quickly as possible because I am due to go out of town on another foray.

Peter G Werner compares the three species you mentioned, George.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Peter_G_Werner/Candy_cap

I didn't run the spores under the scope, but all the macroscopic characteristics point to fragilis, especially the scent, which, when fresh is strong only maple-like in fragilis.

Alan-  Like many mushrooms, these have considerable variation among the specimens.  The pics of these are the beefier type of the lot.  There were many among them that were miniscule.  Like Arora says, the latex on these can be damn hard to get.  You have to scrap them at the right place and make sure there has been enough moisture, otherwise, they won't milk.

Zero reticulation on the cap in any specimen.  I didn't taste any raw, but I'll be at the site on Monday and I'll do it then and see what happens.

I already printed these the first time out and have been waiting for the beefier ones to mature.  The print is white.

Be back Sunday evening if all goes well.

Thanks for all the help and great advice.

L. aquiflous has the extact same smell as the candy cap and it is not edible, though it has a different habitat being more prone mossy wet areas.

I collected some L. Aquifluus in 1996 and they still smell as strong today as the day I picked them. Been trying to get the mycellium to grow out from the ones I picked to see if they smell in mycellium stage, but no luck so far. They are 12 years old of course and it is a long shot

are you sure it wasn't the splenda that made you sick?(splenda makes me physically ill)

I know some folks that pick and eat those.  I personally don't.

Yea maybe you should send samples to some experts for an exact ID and eat them again to see if it was really the mushroom.

Maybe some species of Lactarius cause the body to not be able to properly process splenda.  I doubt the people in the splenda lab have tested it on Lactarius fragilis.  Sue the negligent bastards.

lol

I thought of every possibility including the ones you listed.  When I was here last I was posting in between violent fits of vomiting.  During one episode I vomitted so violently I vomited up blood.  That shook up me a bit.  I went back today and tasted them.  They weren't bitter at all.

They grow not 20 feet from the Slimy Amanita.

I could send some samples to someone if they wanted to do the work.  I know I won't have the time.  I had already taken a spore print, but I will be back at the site tomorrow for a last inventory of the area.  There are quite a few things growing over there.  I'll make a few more prints and dry several specimens.

I wondered about the Splenda thing, but it is probably better than using sugar.  I don't do many carbs.

Oh and I need to add this.  These particular carpophores were fruiting off of some decaying wood that had Oak roots running through it.  It was the combination of the large desposit of organic material combined with the mycorrhizal association that produced such large forms (my hypothesis).
