The dark patch you see here is much darker grey and the rhizomorph seems to colonize right around it.You can even see a ropey strand of mycelium curving to form an outline. Penicillium or some other nasty stuff?

Magnify the image.
You'll see the rhizomorph as a clear silver 'halo' outline this darker grey area.

Also mind you this might happen to be an inoculation point in line with the hole. I wouldn't know as I haven't removed the foil cover. If you see the actual jar this area kinda reminds of 'slug skin'; the kind of filmy grey matter with 'tiger's stripes'...

Yeah... I can't tell what I'm looking at either. :/
But the way you describe it sounds normal, just the difference between ropey rhizomorphic growth in comparison to the fluffy non-rhizo growth. And it's common, when the humidity is a little too high, for the mycelium to get kinda' grey due to over saturation.
I could be ass backwards wrong though, any other pictures?

Get a new camera, or learn how to take pictures. No one can tell you anything based on that blurry ass photo.
You can add circles to the image all you want. It is still blurry.

Dude, if you only intended to parrot without anything else to add you might as well have not bothered. You can to start a "blurry ass photo thread" on your own...

Thanks hood- for actually looking at the photo (the grey area described is quite clear despite the blurriness). The area in question has since overgrown and as Naxx suggested probably is competive dykariotic growth. My concern stems from the fact that [1] as it seems to appear at an inoculation point [2] some days prior to inoculation was discovered a terrible case of penicillium [in the fridge:have spores-will travel!], that it could be, as the rhizomorph colonizes an outline around it. And as the mycelium is obviously dominant, could possibly overgrow the mold. But as of now all seems to be okay. Once again thanks.

OK, all the complaints out? The threads here that turn into one long bitch-fest piss a lot of us off. This is an education forum.
In the future, this sort of thing is more happy in the Contamination forum, as well.
The white part circled/hexagonaled looks good to me. It IS pretty hard to tell due to the low resolution picture. If you could get a clearer picture you could get a more precise answer.
But the gray area doesn't look bad yet, keep an eye on it though. Most of your enemies would show discoloration where the mycelium is NOT already growing, areas uncolonized.

Wow, if you can take one picture you should be able to take more. We are here to help. Not go back and forth arguing with you over a shitty picture in order to help you. Do you want to be helped or do you want to be lazy. It's your choice.

The area seems fine now- Point taken about the proper forum. Nor do I care to go back and forth over a "shitty" picture as it were. Yet perpetuating one's opinion about the photo and berating the ability to produce a photo that satisfies the ability to look closely at it doesn't help me or anyone else either. If you can't see what's being pointed out-you can't help no matter what you think about the photo. And after all, we're not talking about photography, and it is not unlikely that optimal conditions for observation will always exist. That's why we're all here doing what we're doing-learning to see things that may not be so clear so we are able to make comparative distinctions based on what we know, not necessarily what we can or cannot see.

I myself see a blurry area where you put your circle. Heres a tip when taking pictures. Either have your camera mounted to a non-moving surface or have the jar set down on something inconspicuous that wouldn't reveal where you are, or both.... just don't hold the jar and hold the camera. Especially at low resolution and even at higher resolution the movement of both your hands that you cannot control will cause blurring. Also try to take pictures without flash under a somewhat natural light as this will help to get the colors you are seeing out there
