Habitat and what type of wood were they growing from, ive been hunting these for the last two months with no luck

Rotten wood near a small stream in the mountains.Lot of oak and maple,maybe some poplar here and there  I can't remember.

The place was timbered a while back,now it's shady second growth.

Can't remember why they changed the name.I have it here somewhere.....

Because when they named Gymnopilus spectabilis in 1951 the mushroom they had was actually Phaeolepiota aurea

Gymnopilus junonius was first published by P.D. Orton in the Transactions of the British Mycological Society in 1960.  (according to index fungorum)
