Hippyinasuit makes a good point though why aren't Americans bitching about their stagnating economy instead of rising oil prices since fixing the one should releave prices as well as give the average American more money to absorb price increases.

Just watch some American news and you'll know exactly why. McCain has said basically that there is no economic problem, it is just people's uncertainty that is holding the economy back.
The corporate owned media promotes the idea that if you just invest more money in the stock market and go shopping more it will all be OK. Never mind the fundamentals are crap, they've got statistics like the CPI that is calculated differently over the years to give the intended result. There are plenty of other statistics they use that are basically irrelevant because they're based on the sliding scale of the US dollar.

Well part of the reason we bitch is that we have shitty mass transit, unlike other parts of the world, and have to use cars to get from point 'A' to point 'B' and back again. Plus the country is so large it takes a lot of fuel to get goods (especially food) and people across it. And those added costs are passed on to the American people.

I see where you're coming from. Yea we Americans were used to payin less than 2 bucks a gallon just a few years ago, so it came as a surprise. The way I see it, if gas prices piss you off, buy a moped (60+mpg), ride a bike, walk, hell get a camel. I won't complain about the prices. If someone wants to make a statement about gas prices then first they need to start using less gas. If everyone cut their gas usage in half we'd see the prices go down dramatically very quickly. Of course there is the factor that higher gas prices mean food will cost more, because it takes gas grow and transport food.
I'm not too worried about it. Read in the paper that Saudi Arabia is going to up its oil production, which is smart of them. We are probably their biggest consumer, and the ripple effect gas prices had on our overall economy would mean they get less money from us. I'm starting to see more and more people on bikes and on foot.

Oh, and outside of major cities? We don't have much in the way of public transportation. And if we DO, it's often late (even in cities it's often late). Our employers just love hearing the excuse "Sorry! Bus / train / subway was running late" -- that gets our asses fired. I don't know about how that flies in Europe.

I think mushmonkey is referring to the suburbs. Frankly this is a matter of poor city planning and not just mass transit.
But seriously, does being 5 min late really get you fired? If I were fired for being 5 min late I'd just go get another job. If they pay me enough I usually manage to show up on time otherwise I'm constantly running 5-10 min late and if they don't like it they are left with the same recourse as the previous employers.
Frankly it's the economy god's punishment for H2s you'll just have to suck it up and buy a motorbike or moped or smart car or just plane anything that isn't a unarmored urban assault vehicle. Do you remember when the OPEC oil embargo happened and the US actually curbed it's consumption and demanded fuel efficient cars? You'd think it'd get easier to predict the second time around.

Man, fuck gas. I personally use very little of it (my vehicle gets 60 mpg on a bad day, I've gone 100+ on a single gallon before), so I've never complained about the price, but I can't wait for someone to come up with a clean, renewable, viable source so that we can stop sending cash to people who want to blow the free world to smithereens. That's what really gets me- we're funding people who hate us. America is just the biggest target, but if there was no America, you bet those psychos would be ranting about the U.K. or Canada or whoever was leading the west.

we're hipocrites. Actualy i just made a post of it when I did the math one day and found out exactly how much gas costs to Americans. I didn't understand how they could complain those were our prices for gas 3 or 4 years ago. Besides any country that popularizes a giant gas guzzling behemoth like the H2 (at taxpayer's expense I might add) then bitches about fuel price is a little retarded. I know it wasn't specifically you doing both those things but the fact of the mater is I see people complaining about it on TV in front of said SUVs, so basically I just had to make a rant thread about it.

He identified one of the positive aspects of high gas prices: increased demand for alternative energy sources.
Increased demand for fuel efficient vehicles is a good thing. Stopping the SUV and pickup jackasses from making stupid choices is also a good thing.
I don't think the government should enforce my vehicle preference on others, or should penalize them through excise or other taxation to support my social ideals, but its one positive of a bad situation imo- one of the few.

Man to all you foreigners, generations of our father's have fought and died so we have the right to complain. The government is acting like a kid who found his dad's gun. We would be bad citizens if we didn't openly display our disaproval of the way things have gone backwards in the USA since 2001. Quit hatin or i'll make the midwest wheat/corn/beef farmers go on strike and everyone will have to eat that disgusting rice crap.

The gas prices also hurt alot more when you realize that eggs, bread, milk and other shit considered staple foods keep going up in price and that hardly anyone likes the president anymore, until Mccain or Obama steps in, then they'll try to get bush back, even if it means more war in the middle east, lol.

Ray, I've noticed that a lot as well. "America-bashing" is a pretty common thing anywhere you go, and I honestly think it has more to do with just hating whoever is on top at the moment more than they actually hate us. Especially on the internet, you get a lot of people, in Britain for instance, claiming Americans are all Imperialists capitalist wasteful pigs because of the actions of some of us. Were I to say all Germans were genocidal maniacs, I would most certainly be called out for it by everyone who saw it, but most people just expect Americans to take it up the ass and keep their mouth shut when they go on bashing us for no reason.
I used to try and defend every allegation thrown around about America. But in the end, most people just want someone to blame for their own situation, and America makes an easy target. They assume a lot of things about us which simply are not true- for instance, the whole thing about America going to Iraq for oil, which has never had a foot to stand on, is still something I hear all the time, and if people have got it in their heads that America is a state comprised totally of Imperialistic pigs bent on subjugating the rest of the world, there's not much you can do about them.

Now, what the hell is wrong with France? They were having large scale race riots in 2005! The land of "Liberty, Fraternity and Equality" or whatever bullshit is racist against Muslims! All French people hate Muslims and think they're so goddamned enlightened, scolding America for going to war without their approval (like we give a damn what little, unimportant France thinks), and they can't even keep things down in their backyard! What a bunch of bigots! They need to get out of the stone age and accept people for who they are!
Now, I don't actually think what I just said in the above paragraph. But that's just a random semi-recent reference pulled up off the top of my head... you don't see Americans going around bashing other countries like that on a regular basis. It does get pretty irritating after a while though, having every little flaw in your country blown up to the size of the moon and nitpicked over the internet. Just let it go, there's nor eason to be bitter.
And I admit, I'm high right now, so I hope some of that made sense lol.

when you say American going to war for oil do you mean the public or the government? Because if you are meaning the government a Former NSA adviser wrote a book called "The grand chessboard" about how the US government should specifically do that in the middle east. I saw the same author slamming bush for his mishandling of the Iraq invasion on the daily show in 2007or8.

Anyone really. The American government hasn't gotten any oil out of it, and even if they had, that certainly doesn't necessarily mean the people wanted it. The fact that we're obviously LOSING a whole SHIT TON of cash on this war and not getting ANYTHING out of it besides security (supposedly) you'd think would cool off the "war for oil" chanters, but if anything it only made them think it more. There's nothing that will benefit from this shit besides, MAYBE, the Iraqi's, and America does ok too if democracy spreads to that part of the country. But that is a gain WITHOUT a dollar sign at the front. monetarily, this war never would have given us anything but grief.
And for all the people saying it was done not to gain oil, but to make the oil we already have more valuable, tell me why any fuel company in their right mind would want that? People are switching from SUVs and generally I am paying LESS for gas than I ever did, I got a friggin scooter for chrissake, gets 60mpg on a BAD day. If anything, this will only hurt them because it will eventually force us to drop oil and find something else to fuel ourselves by it.
It's just a senseless allegation- the ex-leader of the NSA could have said that all he wanted, but the National Security people don't have shit to say about who we invade and whatnot. Because one burned out government official says we should have done it doesn't mean it what was done was for the same reasons, or that anyone was ever listening to him even.
