Shiitake growlog (Update 8-09)

Super fun, diehard mushroom, glad I finally got to try these. Culture from Sporeworks, shot to LC and prepared WBS jars.
Cherry and Poplar shavings/sawdust, filled to 500g bags and supplemented around 15% with 50/50 wheat/rice bran, and 3% gypsum. Colonization temps 75F, fruiting 60F.

Didn't get the moisture content quite right, a little too wet in the bags so decided to brown outside the bag.

The Poplar bags were started 2 weeks before the cherry and they really struggled, but eventually browned and are here for the dunk and cold shock. Ice in a cooler with water, for 24 hours in the basement.

Poplar blocks finally fruiting. Much better than I expected seeing as how slow it has grown compared to the cherry (which is knotting like crazy) and how I botched moisture content on the poplar bags. Got about 1-2 fresh pounds from the first 3 blocks flush, not optimal but glad to have this much success.

7-23 update, cherry blocks are coming in.

2nd flush 8/09

8/09 harvest from 3 blocks...

Nice grow! I can't wait to give shiitakes a go myself. That bottom block is fruiting beautifully. Looks like you're doing really well for your first time growing the species.

Thanks for the comments all.

Relatively easy, the shiitake LC is super healthy and thrives on WBS. The tricky parts are temperature and final substrate composition. A good mix of sawdust and shavings in the 2-4mm range seems ideal. Stamets recommends wood chips as well, but that wasn't an option for me. And of course supplemented with wheat and rice bran for the nute kick.
Moisture content is deceiving in sawdust, as it absorbs/hides lots of water on you. If you adjust it to the moisture feel of manure, it will be too wet. I almost have to load the bags to a dry feel. I think I ended up going with 500ml water to 500 grams of dry substrate, which seems pretty low to me but obviously is working
And finally fruiting temperate, I am lucky to have a steady 60F available to fruit these in. Wouldn't try to go much higher.
Shiitake is a 2 month waiting game but one impressively tough mushroom to work with, nothing phases it, until later flushes that is.

Nice pics. However if you added 30% of bran the crop could be bigger (putting a part the woodchips..you can find them at the pet store)!
I really like this mushrooms.
Pay attention to the Trichoderma molds that will appear on the block.
To prevent this: somebody wash the blocks under the faucet a day yes and a day no, others roll the block in the ash, and others ones soak the block in a solution with water and lime.
Fabio
PS. you've the same my mini-greenhouse. It's that chinese brand with the "V".

I did use bran. Doubtful 30% would really achieve that much more than the 15% blend of rice/wheat bran that I used. It's possible, but any improvement past this point is going to be moisture content, and the addition of actual woodchips.
No idea, it's some crappy greenhouse I had for outdoor plants, the shaky kind that feels like the leaning tower.

adding more colonized spawn could add the same effect as adding bran? i understand brand is added in order to reduce the spawm amount needed.

Bran is high in nitrogen content. Mycelium needs a lot of nitrogen to divide some "hard" cells like cellulose. The enzymes to divide the cells are made of nitrogen in great part.
Bran is considered a supplement, to raise the crop..
If more spawn is used you can simply achieve faster colonization but not more mushooms. More mushrooms are given by the addition of the bran. Stamets suggest the 30% of dry weight of the substrate (woodchips+sawdust)
