computer stalls at loading screen...

my computer won't go past the windows xp loading screen, the screen that comes up before you have to put your password in.
I have two hard drives, one with windows xp and other programs on it, the other one with music/vids.
It will work fine when the second hard drive isn't plugged in so it has something to do with that.
Any ideas?

I managed to get it to boot with the second hard drive plugged in by using something on my ultimate boot cd called smart boot manager.
still don't know what the problem is though.

Ya, that's not good.
It could be a corrupted hard drive, a bad driver, a missing system file. I don't know, if I were you I'd run it in safe mode, run msconfig and remove some startups, run some antispyware, run add/remove and start deleting shit you don't need, run a hard drive corruption scan. Those are the obvious starting points.
You might be looking at a new beggining for your system.

Yeah see if you can boot to safe mode and if you can you need to fix some shit. If not you might be looking at a new harddrive and OS at the least.
I had this problem and it ended up being some new hardware I installed wrong. Let's hope your fix is just as simple.

It's only my second hard drive that is being weird, My OS is on a different hard drive and works fine.
The problem is, it won't boot when the second harddrive is plugged in, although it seems to do it when i used that boot manager thing on my ultimate boot cd.

Oh cool, well that simplifies things quite a bit then. The downside is that my bet is now on corrupted hard drive. I'd run a disk scan on that and get back afterwards.

no virus's or anythin, i've formated it and im still having problems, it's a seagate drive and i used seatools for windows and seatools for dos, it fails the self test but passes the generic tests, i think the hard drive is fucked.

Things to try.
1....safe mode 2....reset to default bios 3....run chkdsk /r from windows cmd prompt 4....run sfc /scannow You may need your original disk for this, I dont remember. 5....run anti-adware/spyware/viruses

I think you might be right. If that drive isn't ancient it should have SMART (Self Monitoring Analysis & Reporting Technology ). Go into the BIOS and see if the drive shows up. If it does see if you can access the SMART information to see how the drive is doing.
If it doesn't show in BIOS, the disk could be corrupt. Have you tried clearing/resetting the master boot record?

I used seatools for windows and did a S.M.A.R.T test and it passed, it only fails the drive self tests.
How do i clear/reset the master boot record since this hard drive is just one for extra storage and the operating system is on another hard drive that works fine?
thanks

Have you tried all this yet? 1....safe mode 2....reset to default bios 3....run chkdsk /r from windows cmd prompt 4....run sfc /scannow You may need your original disk for this, I dont remember. 5....run anti-adware/spyware/viruses
Whats on your secondary hard drive? Media, are you using it to dual boot another OS....etc?

sounds like its a dodgy driver that's screwing your system over, maybe seagate HDD's have a specific one? if so try reinstalling it

Last I checked, hard drives don't use drivers. They're loaded/mounted by BIOS I thought...
