Vaporizer Broken
    #8595839 - 07/04/08 07:33 PM (2 months, 2 days ago)

I think I just toasted my fucking vaporizer. I was driving around with it plugged into a power converted in my car. And instead of turning off the vaporizer when I was finished I turned off the power converter instead. Now whenever I turn on my vaporizer it just blinks 140 and can't be set to a higher temperature. I think I fried the electronics with a surge.  :crankey:  :enraged:  :doublefu:

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this or did I just lose my $100 vaporizer

Thank you

I don't know if it's broke, but driving around with a vape plugged into a cig outlet, priceless.

The thesis that I want to advance today is that the drug war and the laws that prohibit the private consumption of certain drugs are unconstitutional. Prohibition laws, themselves, violate every tenet of limited government that is embodied in our Constitution.

 Reminds me of my freshman year at UC Santa Barbara, and taking trips to LA to see some Dodger games (one of my friends being a huge baseball fan - and his truck equipped with an AromaZap with cigarette lighter adapter :tongue2:).

StrandedVoyager, don't know what to tell ya.  Good luck though!
If it's any consolation, I'm on my second (and I believe) soon to be third $100 vaporizer.
Well worth it, imo... maybe someday I'll snag a Volcano, but these small 'Zaps are great and quite stealthy (even if they don't last forever).

The problem with driving around with a vaporizer is that your car cig outlet will supply more current than the standard adapter that it came with.

They are both around 12 volts, but the little wall adapter is pretty wimpy and the vaporizer is counting on it being pretty wimpy and the voltage dropping considerably.  Cars have a lot of current available and the voltage won't drop, giving the coil in the vaporizer way too much power.

The proper thing to do is to plug it into the adapter that it came with, then break the circuit and put an ammeter in series with it.  Record the number of milliamps.

Then with your car running plug in the vaporizer and record the number of milliamps.  If it is significantly higher, there is too much power going into the vap and it will get too hot and fry it.

You'll need to add some resistance in series with your car adapter to lower the current draw back down to near where it was with the adapter it came with.  Normal tiny resistors will get too hot, I'd start by adding some one ohm one watt resistors.  If they get too hot put more in parallel, and sets of them in series to add more resistance until you get the current down to the right level.

Hmm... you would think someone before me would've had this problem and it would've been addressed before I tried to use  a car outlet. Oh well... what would the cost of those improvements be? I was thinking of just throwing a surge protector on there. Also is there anyway to bring back electronics from surge hell?

Did it come with a car adapter?

I have a massive collection of resistors that I removed from broken electronics, all sorted into envelopes with the proper values.  If you have to get them from rat shack it will be around $5 for a pack of several one watt one ohm resistors.

Surges are not your problem.  Vaporizers don't care at all about surges because its just a coil that gets hot.  All it cares about is how hot it gets and that is determined by how must constant current there is flowing through the coil.

My guess is that a wire in the coil is broken and that would be very difficult to impossible to repair.

But you should take it apart and put an ohm meter directly on the coil, make sure it really is fried.  If its just the wires going to the coil then its an easy fix.  But I don't see why a car would fry the wire, its the part that gets hot that would fry first.

Nah... not yet man. I just can't afford one yet but I am saving up for one. Honestly, I'm probably going to get the $300 Chinese knock off Volcano instead of the $650 Volcano.

So I just bought a new vaporizer today, so everything is cool. I'm just disappointed that for the forseeable future I'm not going to be able to smoke in my car because seriously hitting that vaporizer while driving on the freeway yesterday was divine. But that's alright, gotta sacrifice a little bit of joy in some places to get it in others.

It is also unbelievable how much vaporizers fuck you up. Yesterday I kid you not, for the first time in almost two months I smoked blunts and joints. I smoked about ten joints and a couple of blunts and I was high but not ripped like I've been in the past. And seriously for about a 1/10th of the pot I could've gotten way way higher on a vaporizer.
