Why do americans piss and moan about gas prices so much?

When I heard Americans were paying $4 a gallon it sounded like a lot, but after converting it to metric I found it was just $1.05 a liter and in Canada the current price is $1.40 a liter. This translates to over $6 a gallon. Many developed European nations pay a comparable price for gas to Canada and in Iceland the price is over $8 per liter. What gives? Why are Americans such complainers?

Because it used to be $1 a gallon only 7 or 8 years ago. Thats a four fold increase in less then a decade.
If your gas went from $1.40 a liter to $5.60 a liter in less then a decade, you would probably complain too.

It needs to be high to solve the foreign dependence problem. If americans dont feel pain at the pump, it will never get solved.
I applaud the recent gas price increase.

I am a bit slow, can you show me proof that these increases are in fact solving our dependance on foreign oil?

Because alternative technologies and energy sources that were once not economically feasible are now viable.
The first steps of this are already visible. Hybrid cars have a huge waiting list and are actually appreciating in value. Car manufacturers are scrambling to keep up. Within a decade or so plug in hybrids could have a huge market share... that is if and only if the price of oil and gas stays high and painful.

My medical bills are not bad and I have cirohsis, I see a GP and a gastroenterologist-liver specialist on a regular basis.
I can't wait for the jack booted thugs to come knocking saying I have to pay for socialist-communist healthcare, war I say.

If fuel wasn't $5.60 a liter in about a decade I would be surprised. Look at how many SUVs the North American market is pumping out that have to be sold with gas price control gimmicks to make people buy them. If car companies were to market and produce efficient cars they probibly wouldn't have to do this. However this isn't stopping the armada of SUVs and RVs bigger than the size of my first apartment from guzzling the gas at this price even. I wouldn't be surprised if the price of gas did go that high because it will only level off when people say "I just can't afford to do this anymore" to those fuel hungry commodities.

When I said what gives I meant, what gives with all the pissing and moaning about fuel prices? Not what gives free health care to Canadians. And anyway I'd hardly call state run health care socialist. After all you commies have your state run road systems, schools, water utilities and police force (for now anyway). I'd hardly call it much different since public health is an essential service (By that i mean you can die without it).

Actually, SUV sales are on a sharp decline in the US. The average consumer is no longer willing to purchase these vehicles at a rate they used to.

I was implying this when I was talking about the gas gimmicks that they need to use to sell SUVs now (gas guarantees and whatnot). Frankly I hope the next year many of those SUV factories are retooled to produce more fuel efficient vehicles or the US auto industry will be in a world of hurt. I haven't looked into if they've followed through but I did hear on the news of a huge investment firm dropping GM stock. This could be an indicator that they did not choose to change their production lines for next years product.

Uhh surely you don't have to be an economist or historian to realize that quick changes in the function of transit, economy and society without any intermediary phase is a recipe for disaster. If tomorrow gas went from $4 a gallon to $40 there would be rioting in the streets and on a more fundamental level how could those people working to fix the problems afford to get to work, much less build energy alternatives? Anyway many of the government's taxes on Gas hardly pay a portion of the inferstructure required to support gas vehicles much less the drain on the economy caused by enormous foreign demand.

We're upset because gas prices have doubled in a few short years. Our dollar's value has plummeted, which most Americans don't seem to realize directly effects the price of gas and other commodities, so they bitch about lord knows what.
They complain about the 20% or so of the gas price that is due to speculation. They ignore the fact that the majority of the increase has come directly from the weak dollar, which is what is motivating the speculators to believe the price will go up.
A weak dollar is worst for America, but can also have a significant detrimental impact on many of the world's economies.
