Verita's
Quote:

There are many plant-based sources of fat. Nuts, seeds, olives, flax, hemp, avocado & coconut all provide EFA's in sufficient quantity for optimum health, without the health risks of saturated fat.

Just so nobody gets the wrong idea here, all things listed contain saturated fat at moderate levels.

Ok, healthyeatingclub.com, not the best source, but it had relevant info and seems reliable:

TYPE OF OIL SATURATED FAT POLYUNSATURATED FAT
(grams per 100 grams of oil)

Coconut oil 85 2
Maize oil 16 49
Olive oil 14 11
Palm oil 45 8
Peanut oil 19 29
Safflower oil 10 72
Soy bean oil 14 57
Sunflower oil 13 50

Regardless, they have a lot less saturated fat than red meat and dairy. I prefer to get a lot of my EFA's from hemp milk. Hemp Bliss is awesome.
I also love cheese, beef and ice cream though.

The saturated fat in plants is different from that in animals. For example, the saturated fatty acids in coconut oil are primarily lauric and myristic fatty acids. To put this in perspective, human breast milk contains saturated fat from primarily lauric acid, whereas the saturated fat in cow's milk is primarily palmitic acid.

Add in the fact that the proportion of saturated fat to mono- or poly-unsaturated fat is VERY different, and it is clear why plant-source fats provide a better cost-to-benefit ratio than animal-source fats.

Here's another good comparison of fat levels in food. Completely irrelevant to the original post, but it has long since been hijaked anyways.

my favorite for flavor, cost, and ease of storage would have to be sunflower oil at the moment. I havent had hemp oil yet, I know its kinda pricey.

not completely irrelevant. We need fat in our diet to keep our intestines well lubricated so that food can slide down much like someone would ride down a water slide in a tube.

What they said was that your colon is basically a smooth tube and there are no "pockets" for these ropes of wasting meat and other shit to get stuck in.

"Colon" cleansing is actually a bit misleading, as the  cleansing takes place in both the small and large intestines, which are most definitely NOT "smooth tubes."

The lining of the intestinal walls:

http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Human_Physiology/The_gastrointestinal_system#Small_Intestine

As you can see, there are many folds in which matter can accumulate, in addition to the millions of villi projecting from the intestinal walls.  Of course, much of the bulk you see in these "ropes" is composed of psyllium "gel," which is also what makes the drinks too thick after sitting for a while.  The benefit of the gel forming during digestion is that it traps whatever matter may be stuck in the various folds and projections within the intestines, then moves out easily.

If you are consuming the Standard American Diet, it is very likely that your intestinal tract is both inflamed AND coated with toxic matter.  This matter would not be visible as "ropes," but rather as a cloudy mucus coating.  (The intestines form mucus in response to irritants.)  The common occurrence of gastrointestinal disorders in those who consume the "Western" diet supports the claim that our intestines are unhealthy.

IMO, a "colon" cleanse is a great idea, particularly if it is done as a fresh start prior to transitioning into a health-supporting diet.

Remembered this thread after reading another poop science thread, and wanted to read about the ropes again to find their name: mucoid plaques.

Saw this and wanted to comment.

First:  I wasn't aware there was any need or intent to clean the small bowel, but whatever.

It should be noted that the drawing quoted in the above is from the small bowel, not the large, and that I've only heard the cleaning to occur in this.

There is no way the plaques are gotten from the small bowel, and the lining of the large intestine is smooth.

Actually the small bowel is too, you've posted a microscopic scale drawing that shows the very small villi.  This stuff absorbs stuff on the molecular scale, and cannot harbor large ropes severl cm in diameter, just can't happen.  THe distance between villi is less than a mm.

Here's a slide from the large intestine, it is smooth, with no where for the stuff to hide.

Quote:

http://www.columbia.edu/cu/biology/courses/w2501/Histopictures/Largeintestine.jpg

You can get adsorbed fecal matter, but this is a medical problem, not the standard, and can easily be removed.  Diseases such as diverticulitis can aid this, but you don't get long ropes, just small pockets a few centimeters at the absolute most in scale.

Are people claiming these mucoid plaques are real?  Or just that the intestine isn't smooth?  Macroscopically it certainly is smooth

As I said:

Quote:

If you've ever cleaned out a drain, you would realize that a "smooth" surface may accumulate layers of gunk.  In the case of our small intestine, the intestinal villus must be exposed to "fresh" food matter in order to extract essential nutrients. Blockages in the large intestine interfere with nutrient processing AND put the appendix at risk for infection.

It is not accurate to claim that our intestines are full of "ropes" of rotting meat and toxic matter, but IMO it is nevertheless quite important to cleanse the intestines on a regular basis to maintain optimal health.  This is particularly true for those who consume refined flour, sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, trans-fats & animal products.

The ropes are made by the psyllium husk. Drink a whole bunch of psyllium husk at once and see.

Yes, that is exactly what I said.   The bulk is psyllium or another gel-forming fiber source, which traps toxic matter that would otherwise remain on the intestinal walls.

When I use psyllium with a regular daily diet it definately looks a lot different coming out then when I'm fasting and cleansing.
