86 is "ideal" (still to warm IMO) temp for the substrate/spawn. NOT THE INCUBATING TEMP. i try to stay 80-84*F. the size of ur containers is also going to matter, if ur using large bags then they will produce more of their own heat compared to a half pint jar.
there is no right answer to this. different genetics will respond to temps differently. i did a side by side with 2 isolates. 1 was O.I. and 1 was K.S. i had 1 jar of each sitting in room temp and 1 jar of each sitting at 80. the O.I. beat the K.S. at 80* by 6 days. on the other hand my K.S. won at room temp by a few days.

Well, with a little adjustment the temp inside my dark box is holding at 82*, I don't think that I could go wrong at this temp

you're still two degrees off. If you went that route you don't want internal temps increasing past 84. Incubators are a waste of time and money unless your house is freezing.

Well my room temp is usually 73 to 75 and that is low for colonization so my incubator consists of an opaque plastic box covered by a piece of foil sitting at the bottom of my closet, the price I paid for it is outrageous amount of $0. The remote temp probe I am monitoring it with reads 81.6*. If this causes total failure then I guess that I you can tell me "I told you so...". PEACE

im interested to find out how the temp of your incubator is almost 7 degrees higher then ambient temps in the room with no additional heat source.
73-75 is perfect temps to colonize jars, don't know why you think that's too low.

All that I can guess is that since the closet door is closed and the immediate space in the closet gets no action from the fans or AC. Plus being in the plastic box is just another form of insulation, and if mycelial growth produces heat like you preach then perhaps the temp probe that is inside the box is registering the sum of room temp, closet space variable, and colonization heat together...

yah, i thought about that too. But the thing is the core temp is usually only 2-4 degrees higher then the ambient temps. So at best you'd see things in the high 70's. It's possible the temp in your closet may be higher then the temp in the outside room.
You'll be ok though, 81.6 is an acceptable temp for your incubator. Just keep an eye on your jars and watch out for any funky smells.
