Beer is.... not Beer
    #8593690 - 07/04/08 02:47 AM (4 years, 10 months ago)

Budweiser, the "Kind Of Beers" is pretty fucking good, but you know what? It's like looking at a rainbow, all the colors are perfectly there, no one outshining the other. It's just like that, perfect, but not perfect. Anyone would tell you a rainbow is just that, a rainbow. Beautiful yes, but significant? No. Blue Moon, or Corona, or Fat Tire or any of those that "unique" taste are good, but its COMPARED to beers like Budweiser. Because it's the rainbow, everything represented. Interesting.

Just food for thought: the drunker or higher perspectives welcome, I'm a few sloshes between each right now. Anyone ever read The Mote In Gods Eye.

It is a very good book.

Budweiser is mass produced factory beer, so of course it's pisswater. I'm not a fan of lager in general but American lager, like budweiser is a disgrace of a beer. Support your local brewery and buy craft beer.

that's a more understandable statement.  I can agree that for taste, most mass produced beers are pretty generic and uninteresting.  Personally, i don't mind the domestics.  MGD is a solid yellow with good body and flavor, it goes down easy, and it's easy on the wallet.  I can't afford 9-12 dollar six packs every time i want to drink some beers.  Usually i'll pick up a 12 pack of some pabst and a six pack of a dank beer.  That way if i want to schwill a few down fast, or invite some friend over, i won't be paying out the ass to do it.

ah, the champagne of bottled beers.  I can't drink high life anymore.  I dj'ed a lot of frat parties and that seemed to be the BOC next to natty ice.  Drank enough high life to last me a lifetime.

american style lager is just shit, imo

I don't understand people that like it, it tastes shitty.

When I was young and first tried beer, I think coors, I was like wtf?  This stuff tastes like shit.  And people were like "its an aquired taste"

Bullshit, it tastes bad.

Then I tried newcastle and some microbrews and I was like, yum.  Tastes good.

I don't think mass-produced is the problem, that's just microbrew fancypants bullshit. Its just bad.

Newcastle is massproduced and tastes good, so there.

Yeah, i definitely wasn't drunk when i wrote that. It's all about your taste buds, either i have real good ones, or really really bad ones. And considering i like a much larger gamut of flavors and foods than most people, i think it's the first.

Why, if it's the pisswater of lager beers, has it been the most popular, most widely served and enjoyed beer around? For decades. Heinikens next in line though, which is pretty funny, because i think Heiniken is like normal beer with a little assneck thrown in.

Well, the fact that it's mass-produced means it's easier on the wallet.  A lot of people can't afford to buy good beer, so they drink the nasty pisswater.  Some places it's harder to find good craftbrews, so people don't always know what they're missing.

If you think Budweiser tastes "pretty damned good", I suspect your tastebuds aren't the keenest.

Beer ought to taste richly of malt and hops.  I can't detect either flavor in the "King of Beers".

I'm with John on this one:

Except for this part:

I really did not enjoy Newcastle. Blech.  But I agree, mass-production doesn't the ruin the flavor.  I imagine cutting costs by cutting corners is what usually accomplishes that.

Because its for alcoholics who drink so many every night they need a light, watered down tasting beer.  They are designed to be chugged en mass, not savored.

That, and a good marketing team goes a long fuckin' way.
Ask any 13 year old (that doesn't drink yet) what they think the best beer is, and they'll probably say Bud, unless daddy is a drinker.

So you tried some shitty craft brews. They can't all be good, you need to figure out what you like.

I like American stouts and porters that use plenty of chocolate malt.  Some breweries are exceptional (Deschutes, Bridgeport, Cascade Lakes) others are pretty bad (MacTarnahan's).

If you like good hops, it's not hard to find a satisfying ESB or IPA. Regular pale ales just don't seem to deliver.

Amber ales are pretty diverse, and probably most palatable to the average drinker.  Some are more richly hopped, others have a sweet undertone to the malt.

I suppose it's possible that all the craft brews in your area are shit; the microbrewing revolution didn't take hold around here until 1980-ish.  But don't just write off craft brews because you've had some bad ones (every Honey ale I've ever had was nasty, and I'm not at all partial to wheat beers)

Yuengling's pretty good and one of my preferred American lagers. I've never liked Bud but do like Michelob. Coors and Miller are OK but nothing to shout about. Some microbrews are really good but there are some really trashy micros out there, too.

In general I prefer ales and European-style pilsners, though I'll enjoy a stout once in awhile.
