 nilla tek gone wrong AND cake question

so... in my curious frenzy... i decided to try nillas scraping tek. My jar had been colonizing for about a month which is too long i think. and the substrate was too firmly packed in there. just didnt see the mycelium eating through that gook... not fluffly enough. so i opened it up and cut out the uncolonized areas.
HOWEVER, almost the entire center was uncolonized, much to my surprise. Im fairly new to the myco-community and was under the impression that the ENTIRE cake is supposed to be colonized. so left with not much choice. a bizarre shell which was broken into flat rectangles (about 1/4 inch thick and 2x1 inch surface area). really weak thin pieces. i dont see the mycelium having enough nutrient for growth, or even enough room on these cake flakes...
They are in the FC anyways to see what happens. any ideas on this hypoth? will the small cake flakes possibly yield smaller shrooms?
i shouldnt have cut into the cake.... but had to experiment. have a few good cakes pinning in jars now that im going to get rdy for casing so im not at too much of loss.

Yeah, the small pieces of cake will yeild little.
Always remember too:
Pack the jars as loosely as possible without empty space.
Let your jars cool all the way, do not rush cooling.
Leave the foil off after inoculation. Tape sucks IMO.
Don't flip, slam, tilt, or shake your jars. You don't want to pack the substrate or disrupt your verm barrier.
Foil left on the jars is one of the worst things you can do. Especially if it is wraped tight. They need gas exchange or will most likely develope bacterial contamination, and the "Dry" verm barrier will get moist.

You should have titled it something else. It wasn't Nilla's fault or anything to do with the method that fucked your grow up. Just my thoughts.

Scraping is usually only used on casings from my knowledge. Fruit cakes like cakes, im sick of all these fancy cake fruiting teks.

arent you the guy that was growing in cups? next time buy some mason jars they are cheap and best of all they have lids. or at least use a small pasta sauce jar, something you can close

eh, this is a good example of why cakes should be skipped and grains used instead. Waaaay too many variables to fuck up on with the PF tek.

Mason jars are just a convenience for us. I've seen plenty of home cultivators in the UK that have AMAZING grows in glass jars covered with foil. Best of all, It's FREE! How cheap is that!

screw cakes go straight to casings. better yields and surprisingly really really easy. never seen one contam before the first flush no matter how shitty you follow the teks

so. i have a batch in the incubator atm that i just took the foil off of as per advice of someone on the shroomery.org community. made sure there was still dry verm layer as barrier. im thinking that the less restricted gas exchange may do the trick for quicker/more effective colonization... as well as preventing the dry verm from getting wet with moisture and inciting bacterial contam

if you poked holes in the foil your jar already had more then enough for gas exchange. If you packed your substrate down in your jars thats your cause for slow growth.
