narrowing pachanoi
    #8593132 - 07/03/08 09:42 PM (3 months, 8 days ago)

I have a pachanoi that I've been growing from a cutting and the top half of it is considerably more narrow than the base.  I'm pretty sure there's a term for that.  I don't know if it's etiolation or if that's something else.

But anyway, is there anything specifically that'll cause this?  Is this more likely to happen with a re-rooted cutting as opposed to one grown from seed?

I know you're supposed to water hardly at all during the winter and then only water when the soil's dried out the rest of the time.  I think I've taken fairly good care of it but haven't given it any plant food yet.  Could that have something to do with it?  And should I just leave it alone and let it keep growing like that or should I cut it where it begins to narrow or something to that effect?

Thanks in advance.

That usually happens when they don't get enough light.

Seriously?  Is that why?

I've had it under an artificial for quite some time now.

Although, I did have it in a windowsill to begin with (after I rooted it) so I guess it's possible it wasn't getting quite enough light then.

What kind of artificial light did you have it under?

For a while now I've had it under a metal halide 400w.  Wouldn't think that would be insufficient.

I guess its possible that it could be something else, but not enough light would be the most common reason, afaik.

It could also be that the roots aren't fully established, less roots = thinner growth.
Aswell as lack of light.

Yeah, I transplanted it pretty recently and the roots seem okay so it must just be that it wasn't getting enough light during that critical point after being re-rooted.

Thanks for the help guys.
