four days after birth. this is my first time and i just wanted some feed back on my set up and cakes. i have no idea what I'm donning. sorry about the pics only a 3 mega pixel camera

looks good! is that a coolmist ur using? u need nearly 100% humidity, bottom reading says 74? i bumped this for you as a more experienced could maybe assess it

It says HI for RH. In my experience, those are the kind of hygrometers you don't want. Most prefer mechanical, because they are more reliable, more accurate, and if not they can be calibrated.
I had one of those a long time ago, it said HI after 90%, but then I found out it was reading way off and my RH was a lot lower than it was reading.
You can get an analog hygrometer at any petstore for cheap. You can get a good one at any cigar shop for $10 or $15 bucks. Even a POS mechanical hygrometer is much better than any digital.
Edit, if you go to a petstore, look in the reptile area.

Look good.
I agree with hole snype about the hygrometers, Go get a POS mechanical one. You will have much more accuracy.

yea its a cool mist and i have a tray with perlite on the bottom shelf. that gage is a pos but all the good ones are so expensive ill buy a cheep mechanical one to day and see what it says, threes a cigar shop right down the road but all they had was digital hydrometers and they only went up to 90%

those cakes look a little dry. it looks like there is very little humidity in that "FC".

Im a beginner as well but shouldnt thos cakes be more colonized after you take them out fo the jar?? I hope im not talking out of my ass

i got a diffirent humidity gauge and its reading 85% humidity. i gunna half to do something to boost the rh. maybe a ultrasonic

Did you get a mechanical? If so you need to see how accurate it is. Wrap it up in a very damp towel for an hour. No less, because the gages react very slowly. After an hour, it should read 100%, but it probably won't. You can adjust it too 100 using the screw on the back.
Some can not be calibrated, but, this method will give you a reference point for 100%. After an hour, take a sharpie and mark what ever it reads. That is your reference.
For example, mine reads 90% when it is actually 100. So I have 90 marked. Get it?

They were "rolled" in verm. That's why they appear to not be fully colonized but it is. (looks like)

Yes get the piece of shit cheap hydrometer because it is much more accurate than then non pos expensive hygrometer.
I went to Walmart and asked 2 people where I could find a hydrometer knowing exactly where there was a shitty digital one was on a shelf. Both of them looked all over led me around in circles for 10 minutes and couldnt even find the one i had found and didnt want.

The verm creates a microclimate on the outside of the cake, which pins love. It also absorbs water from misting, and feeds it to the cakes.
You never heard of dunk and roll? Read young grasshopper. Read until your eyes are crossed, and read some more. Read until you dream of birthing cakes. LOL

i calibrated that hydrometer and it was dead on but it only reads up to 90%. i also plumbed a ultrasonic in to the Martha. pins started about a day after the ultrasonic was put in so I'm not sure if the ultrasonic did it or not. the walls have condensation on them now.
