Kava
    #8585103 - 07/01/08 06:27 PM (2 months, 5 days ago)

I like to drink Kava occasionally.  I have seen it labeled as a supplement, but what are the properties that make it a supplement?  Other than the calm slightly euphoric feeling I get, are there other actual health properties?  Is its only health benefit these calming qualities?  Has anyone used it long term and found anything interesting?

What is your means of preperation? Decoction or steeping apparently does not work well as the Kavalactones, the active ingredient, is not water soluble. A trick I read was to decoct the Kava root in coconut milk, where the fats in the milk will absorb the Kavalactones.

Still after many attempts... I have yet to have a decent session.

(edit) - Also just to respond to your question, Kava completely inhibits any sexual desire, which is why traditionally, it is common to see Kava Kava Cafes most often exclusive to men. With the euphoric and calming effects and also the general sense of acceptence and increased social ability, Kava was a way for men to bond and make peace. An interesting tid-bit.

i'd be careful.  I think they may cause ulcers.  So I stopped taking it.  I have the liquid alcohol free tincture, but one time I spit up blood after taking it and I knew it was from the kava.

I use Kava King -King's Reserve, it is powdered.  It is made from only the lateral root.  It definitely works.  I do not do anything but mix about a  tablespoon or so with a cup of water.  Usually after two cups I feel really nice. I can see it being used socially, I tend to get "talkier" when it kicks in.

I have tried other types of powdered Kava and teas and they had no noticeable effect on me.  The first time I used this one, it did.

I got a Kava hangover once after ingesting a phenomenal amount of it. The next day I was nauseous all day...bad. I don't want no more.

Jeez man I hope you're ok now.  That's not supposed to happen!  Traditional methods are truly the way to go if you're going to.

The concern is regarding liver health:

http://www.erowid.org/plants/kava/kava_health_liver3.shtml

Quote:

Although kava has been consumed for centuries, concerns for the liver toxicity of kava has become a health concern only since 1988. Since that time 32 reports have suggested the involvement of kava in liver disease.  Of the 32 reports, only one is involved with traditional consumption of kava and 31 involved herbal kava extracts.

Quote:

heavy kava drinkers were more likely to suffer from general ill-health, skin rash, shortness of breath, malnutrition (with 20% loss of body weight and 50% loss of body fat), liver damage and biochemical changes in red and white blood cells and platelets similar to those caused by large doses of alcohol.

Quote:

There is however a high prevalence of chronic liver disease in the pacific island countries. Although this has been attributed to hepatitis B infection, the recent suggestion of possible liver effects of kava would make it important that a proper study is performed to evaluate this possibility.

So take that how you will.  I don't use more than once a month, or if I do a few times a month its usually several between.  Here's how I prepare it:

1. 24-32 oz of your favorite juice \ blend.  Blends can be better than pure juices for the thickness.  I like mango nectar.
2. Add 4 rounded tablespoons of powdered root.
3. Stir gently until root is wet.
4. Blend on lowest setting for 5 minutes.
5. Let it stand for 5-10 minutes or so.
6. Blend the root from the bottom, just 10-30 sec.
7. Immediately pour through cheesecloth or screen of some sort.
8. Clean screen, strain again until it strains clear.  Consume.

Another good recipe, I got my last Kava from them:
