Okay, now for the questions
I have this purple spot on my casing layer:
Now, the mushroom cap next to this spot did open up, so maybe the purple is actually spores? Only thing is that the purple isn't directly under the mushroom cap, also there isn't any purple near the other open caps. This is my main concern. I don't want to go poisoning some friends.
Next, if you will, examine the last picture from outside the tub. Every mushroom is like, at different stages. I don't know the best way to handle this harvest. (*Also, one of the caps (the one that looks dark) is completely flat now and pretty black. How long do I have to pick this before it rots?*)
Okay, back to the harvest. Should I just pick everything I can right now and apply another casing layer? Or should I just pick the mature ones? Don't seem like I'll ever be able to add another casing layer if I do it that way.
Is it safe to mist this bad boy? Or inject some water? Is it not being humid enough why they're so small (I was expecting the double tub to create the micro-climate).

LOL, no, I'm talking about the long hands in one of the pics. You could ski on those. Pretty nice grow for your first. Keep it up. You might get a better 2nd flush after that substrate has been hydrated. What are your fruiting conditions?
I can't really tell what that spot is by the pic. Assuming that it isn't anything bad... I would go ahead and pic all of the mushrooms and dunk / re-fruit.
Small mushrooms pack a punch just like the big ones.

Yeah, I definitely need a better picture. I tried but I couldn't get this camera phone to do any good.
What sort of stuff can I do to make sure its spores not a contam? Can I cut a piece out and see if its purple just on the top?
This is also the first I've heard of dunking a casing, even though I thought I read everything. But I'm guessing you just fill the casing tray with water and let it sit in the fridge for a day? If not, just say no and I'll do the reading.
How much time do I have to harvest and dunk? Is it critical that it happens now or can I wait a couple of days?

You could wait another day. I would keep an eye on the big ones or pick them. They taste horrible after dropping spores and it makes a mess.
You could dig around in that dark spot and see what it is.
Dunking is very beneficial to any substrate.
Your skinny mushrooms could be attributed to substrate depth, RH, FAE, contamination, substrate moisture, and more. Does it feel dry?
Nothing is wrong with skinny mushrooms. They still get the job done, but it would be a good idea to correct whatever is causing it and correct it so your next flush will be better.

Aiight. I guess I'll just do this tonight after a nap and get it over with.
I'll dig around the dark spot and take some pictures. Not quite sure what to look for, but I'm half sure its spores.
The skinny mushrooms could be due to both contamination and RH. The PF cakes I used never smelled quite right ever since I dunked them, but everything has always looked good. (I'm assuming all is good based off an assumption that there's no invisible contams or that they'd show themselves eventually)
And thanks for the complement. I put a lot of time and energy into this and I'm glad everyone here can appreciate how cool this hobby is.
P.S. BRF cakes are balls. I wish I understood this sooner.

and spores shoot in all kinds of directions.
pick your first flush. DUNK. dont worry about putting it into the fridge, just fill it in the bathtub (cleaned first) and just let a slow trickle fill it up and let the water keep flowing it will eventually flow out the holes. let it do this for a hour or more.
then reaply your casing layer. what are you casing with?
how deep is your substrate?
edit: whats your hygrometer read? how many holes with polyfil do you have there?

Sorry if I'm a little incoherent I'm fucking tired.
Thanks for your reply. I actually don't have a hydrometer (I got one from Pet Smart, but I quickly found out it sucks). It probably was due to lack of FAE. I used the double tub tek, but with a casing tray inside with perlite. 8 holes stuffed with poli-fil. I stuffed those mother fuckers good, then removed the poli-fil entirely. I think next time I'm going to barely stuff the holes.
I really REALLY wish I had time to prepare another casing layer and to dunk -- I'll just have to do it after this next flush. I have to be at work in a few hours, so this whole harvest thing really caught me at the most inconvenient of possible work schedules. I was really caught off guard at how quickly the mushrooms grew once they started. I was getting used to the slow shit.
My substrate is maybe 3 inches of crumbled BRF cakes. I am using the 50/50 casing tek.
So now I got some more questions. Tomorrow I'll sneak some time to extract the pictures off the camera phone for you guys (I'm actually impressed at how many I Have).
It wasn't until I started to yank out the mushrooms, stalk and whatever substrate it was clinging too that I realize I had no idea what I was doing. So I took a razor blade and start "cutting down" the stalks so to speak. So I have about 50% yanked mushrooms and 50% cut mushrooms. I tried to cut as close to the substrate as I could. There are like fifty green stumps now sitting on my casing.
So, I don't know. Bruising is green right? I wasn't concerned until I peeled a couple of mushrooms apart and the inside was also green. But it didn't look like a mold green. A couple more mushrooms and it was nice, white, and stalky on the inside when I peeled it.
So is it fine to have a shitload of stumps?
Okay, now the skinny fuckers who's caps are all black... they're all mooshy. Should I just toss these?
Hmm, what else. Okay, and does leaving any mushroom parts behind on the casing layer cause problems? I think I may have dropped a few slices of mushroom onto the mycelium/substrate.
What else what else....
Do you guys just proceed to drying, or do you wipe off as much soil from the stems as you can? I guess its a stupid question but it was taking me forever to wipe off the soil.

Bruising is blue. Trich is green. If you have stumps, pick them, don't leave them there.
Toss the caps of the skinny ones but if the rest of the shroom is good then keep it.
Leaving mushrooms bits on the subs causes no problems other than looking ugly as they rot.
Clean your mushrooms, then dry. Would you eat a carrot covered in dirt?
Finally, the purple is probably just spores.

go to work, come home and pick the first flush. PICK. run your water to "dunk" it. set fruits up to dry while it soaks, you can cut the verm/soil off now, or after theyre dry, or not at all, its up to you.
explain to me how you have this set up again please. you have a tray with your sub and a casing layer set on perlite in a double tub with 8 polyfil holes? is this correct?

I'm having such a hard time keeping my eyes open. So I messed up by cutting the shrooms down. I vaguely remembered someone saying something about scissors but I guess that's to cut off the mycelium at the bottom... after their picked.
Son-of-a-bitch.
I don't know if I have the willpower to go and pull out the stubs. Can this wait 24 hours or do I need to act fast?
And you're saying go to work, come back, and then to pick the first flush then dunk. Does this include the stubs that I'm supposed to be picking? Will there really be another full blown flush by the time I get back from work or just a bunch of pins?
