I finally learned how to use usenet/newsgroups

and it's
Using grabit, I'm downloading batches for a bunch of binary groups, for everything from movies, tv, ebooks, warez, games, etc. My ISP is gonna be PISSED at the bandwidth I'm gonna be using for the next month. They can go screw themselves though, since they only allow 4 simultaneous 512mb connections, whereas most ISPs supports 8 or 12.
One question: I've been trying to use port 443 instead of 119 for SSL connections, but they aren't working for any group I've tried it on. Is this a personal firewall issue, an issue with my ISP's newsgroup server, or the newsgroup not supporting SSL?
If you know a group that does support SSL, let me know so I can test it out.

I remember being on newsgroups when AOL first came out.
They are indeed especially with all the fancy browsers and newsreaders. Stringing together a 150 part movie nowadays must be simple!!

Good for you. I have tried it a few times and can never get it. I tried it only a few months ago, but still couldnt figure it out.
Is the selection good?
-------------------- Behold yon miserable creature. That Point is a Being like ourselves, but confined to the non-dimensional Gulf. He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

It could be better, but I've found some olympic trial stuff on there that I don't think I could find on torrents or anywhere else. Or maybe there's a website and I just didn't know about it. I'll be checking back when the olympics start, because there's a few events I always enjoy watching and I don't have a tv. I don't think the bar I frequent is the type to air it either.
Also, with my ISP metering my torrents, newsgroups work twice as fast, even after they too are metered. I can dl a movie in about an hour and a half instead of three hours. That there's streaming speed (if it weren't zipped).
I'll reserve judgement for after I've been using it for a while.
I'm mostly learning a backup skill for when torrents and other p2p become unsafe to use. Something tells me usenet will still be there.

I still haven't messed around with newsgroups too much. I have EmbarQ DSL and I don't think they have one.

I take it that's basically text-based online D&D.
Then afterwords you all link to your favorite ASCII porn.

I've downloaded 685GB since I last re-installed my client (I go through roughly 70GB/mo heh). Newsleecher is the best client, while Alt.Binz is a pretty good free alternative with search. Giganews has a service that lets you use port 80 and up to 10 connections with optional encryption. I love being able to download at 6Mbps+

I'll probably switch off GrabIt before the next time I go to get stuff off there, since they don't have a free search function (I use some website). Although, I could probably get by fine without any search.
