Assuming you can get it open and get the drive out, one of these would probably work.

Hold the select and menu buttons at the same time for 6 seconds. If that doesn't work, hold the select and play buttons at the same time, for 6 seconds.

Also, leave it plugged into a charger (USB port, etc) hooked to a running computer for a few hours to ensure you have enough battery to turn on.

Definitely try what zouden said before pulling it apart. Mine has frozen a couple of times and holding the center 'select' button with 'menu' simultaneously for 6 secs(or longer to be sure) did the trick.

How old is it?
I had a 4th gen iPod (last black/white screen made) any the hard drive straight up crashed about 4 months ago. In the 4 months following mine dying, I know 3 other people who's 4th gen iPod did the same thing.
I swear to god they build these things to die within a certain time period.
By the way, I'm not sure if that 3.5 IDE to 1.8 converter will work for the HD in an iPod. I took mine apart and the drive looked smaller than a laptop HDD. I would find it and tell you for sure, but I took it apart because I wanted to see how tiny the platters were. They were about 1.5-2inches in diameter, btw.

A standard laptop hard drive is 2.5", not 1.8", so I would hope the iPod drive looked smaller.

In a way, you are correct. Because the battery is not replaceable, after a few years, the iPod will be pretty much useless as a portable device.
