I assume you need to know the loop holes involved with the law to do this successfully. and what kind of music would be most preferred?

i think you're being had.
generally people throw parties lose money in the US at least.
also we don't need more asshole in it for the money.

Be careful about how you advertise. that is how my friends got busted when they threw a rave.
They were going to make a few bucks, not all that much, until the cops showed up and confiscated everything. all the sound and light equipment that was rented. They ended up losing a lot after all that business.
Decorating was more fun than the rave itself...We all ate an eigth of shrooms in the afternoon and went to town with spray paint (those of us with artistic tagging skill anyway) and the rest splashed around glow in the dark paint and watched...fun idea anyway if you have free reign on your venue.
As for music choice. what kind of people are you inviting? Don't you know what you and your friends like? I would personaly throw in some tiesto, or some of his tweeks on other artists' songs.
As far as legal loopholes....good luck. there are all kinds of codes, ordinances, permits, and whatnot.
Only thing I know from experience is don't throw it in an abandoned warehouse and let the pigs find out about it lol. Although it was very intense, almost in a fun way, when 15-20 cop cars all threw their lights and sirens on at once.

Don't expect to make money on it. If you have fun, put on a good show and not lose too much money then you've come out on top.

some people have spent thousands throwing a party, and not make all their money back. depends on location, and promotion for it.

Possibly.
But someone always runs off with the money and you're stuck with a big bill and an angry, unpaid dj.
Good luck!

Well, no, not really. The chances of getting caught would probably be greatly reduced though.

What if I were the one running it and payed everyone fairly.
I cant see why you cant have that legally happen, its no worse then a bar, as long as you follow safety codes and get all the liscenses to sell whatever needed to sell.
worse comes to worse you could sound proof the place and make sure no light gets out.

who the fuck charges money for an outlaw party? That defeats the whole purpose of throwing one.

well, for legal parties to happen you're much better off finding a licensed and bonded venue. Otherwise you're going to have to go to your town/city government and apply for permits, then you have to buy insurance, ensure public safety and health concerns are met, hire security, and pay your dj's.
Of course that's if you plan on doing a pretty large party. If you're keeping it small chances are you will be barely able to break even. Out of all the parties i and my crew organized, i think the most we made was about 200 bucks split between 6 people. Your best bet is to get a bunch of people together, find a local club, hire local talent, and promote the shit out of it. You may make some cash, but chances are you'll lose money.
