Pioneering spirit and state-sanctioned risk

People love their heroes and those that took great risk to further mankind's knowledge and territory.
The entire world watched Neil Armstrong step foot on the moon.
The same country that launched the rocket also mandates seatbelts, helmets, puts disclaimers on cigarette packs and makes laws against what adults can do to their own bodies to 'protect' us from harm as we are aparently all retarded beings incapabale of making our own decisions.
The same country finds it acceptable for some to take part in high risk car races that serve only to entertain, or bloodsports or cheer when hockey players bash each other. And of course, we love the greatest sport of all - war!
As a former bi-athlete, I had to laugh when a lifeguard freaked out and blew a whistle at me for swimming outside the plastic buoys in a small pond when I was in my 30s. *gasp* The water was over my head!
Why do we love John Wayne's on-screen image or that of Evil Knievel? Yet our governmental 'parents' have to try to reign us in at every opportunity unless they sanction the risk.
Do we really need a federal mother hen to make sure we never stub our toe (which happens anyway)?
How can this not squelch our collective adventurous spirit?

I almost felt free and responsible for my own well-being for a moment.
Thanks for pulling me back from the brink.

If anything, it would give rise to defiance.
