Is war inevitable? If so, why?
    #8557978 - 06/24/08 11:13 AM (2 months, 12 days ago)

I'm reading Robert E. Carter's book titled "The Japanese Arts and Self-Cultivation" and I came across this quote that I'd like to share.

"Unlike the authors of old-time warriors classics such as The Art of War and The Book of Five Rings, which accept the inevitability of war and emphasize cunning strategy as a means to victory, Morihei understood that continued fighting--with others, with ourselves, and with the environment--will ruin earth. "The world will continue to change dramatically, but fighting and war can destroy us utterly. What we need now are techniques of harmony, not those of contention. The Art of Peace is required, not the Art of War." ...Everyone can be a warrior for peace. (Ueshiba 1002, 8-9)"

War is the way of things for humanity at this time and all of our past. That's about all you can really say.

When war makes a wealthy few a profit, it will always flourish.  Its the bankers who lend out our tax dollars at interest for our governments to spend on war which creates huge debts to them.  And thus we are debt slaves in perpetual wars which cost the taxpayers as much as possible, moving wealth from the people to an extraordinarily wealthy few.

Furthermore, the Military Industrial Complex guarantees the wars will continue because it has become so large that we need a constant supply of combat to use all the equipment being made.

Not true IMO. When the average soldier refuses to fight so that the wealthy can profit and sees this bs for what it is and decides that loving is better than fear and hating, THEN, war will not be inevitable.

Great post.

The powers that be fear the draft but what will happen is the younguns at 18 are free to vote and to get fucked and they will be as the choice will be SOME kind of government service.  If you don't want to fight then they gov will figure out what else they can do to profit from your efforts.  As if 12 years of school slavery and imprisonment wasn't enough.  Where does it end?

Yes war is inevitable there is too much money in it and too many people who like to blow up shit and kill people.

War, in its simplest form, is basically a clashing of ideals and/or desires that humans choose to resolve by ripping the shit out of each other.
People fought thousands of years ago for the same garbage they're fighting over today: religion, greed for wealth and power (land, gold, control, etc), fear of the unknown (people different from ourselves), etc. I don't see much change in the reasoning behind war, we're just becoming more efficient.
Unfortunately, as the world population continues to grow at an alarming rate, I can only expect the frequency of those clashes to increase. We monkeys need our space, and it's running out fast. We'll have to learn how to get along or find a rock to hide under come doomsday.

History shows war to be inevitable. However, history is anything but the end-all authority, and I believe we can make it stop. As for how, well, that's tricky, but it seems to me there are a lot of people working their asses off on figuring it out.

War is inevitable simply because peace can't last forever.

However that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and prevent war as much as possible.

Of course peace can last. Just wait until the human race goes extinct from it's wars and we will have a real shot at it.

Depends upon how you define war.  Small-yet-violent conflicts are inevitable, war on grander scales are not inevitable per se.

"The difference between free-market capitalism and state capitalism is precisely the difference between, on the one hand, peaceful, voluntary exchange, and on the other, violent expropriation" (Murray N. Rothbard, 1973).

"The market is not a jumble of distorted and unrelated events.  Instead, it is a highly complex but orderly and efficient mechanism which provides a means for each person to realize the maximum possible value and satisfaction commensurate with his abilities and resources" (Linda & Morris Tannehill, 1970).

Why are small, violent conflicts inevitable?

Because peace can't last forever. How difficult do you think it would be to maintain complete peace for a thousand years? It's pretty easy for a conflict to turn violent.

People are never able to agree with each other. Never have been. There is always conflict.

However, it is possible to reorganize our conflict into less-violent forms. Over time, cities, with their own violent conflicts stretching into the past, have become united into much larger nations.

The sense of hopelessness comes with the fact that our capacity for destruction seems to have grown exponentially with our unity, rather than in simple multiplication. But can you imagine even the governments of one, two, three hundred years being able to sit on their nuclear stockpiles for over half a century?

Capitalism has actually been an amazingly successful method of sublimating conflict into nonviolent pursuits. I see this as the trend of history - not capitalism inherently, but simply the transformation of interpersonal rage from violence to less-violent pursuits that might otherwise seem unrelated.

A more reasonable question might be "will there be less war?"

I agree with you Tchan... it seems like there will be less wars in the future, as countries become more civilised.
