Why would mold be such an issue now?
    #8544056 - 06/20/08 11:25 AM (3 months, 20 days ago)

Hello,

I have to start off by saying I haven't grown in a while, but would have to say that I was very lucky in avoiding contamination and getting fairly copious amounts of shrooms for being a beginner. I had grown for ten months before trying shrooms, I have never bought shrooms or done shrooms that I did not grow.

I simply used the PFTek, at one point I had some casings at the same time in what amounted to office paper boxes lined with plastic that resulted in large mushrooms, although the casings where sparse, they where each one half pftek cake a piece.

Once again at this time I had a fishtank full of pf tek cakes.

Lately I can't avoid mold to save my life, resulting in a lot of lost time and general annoyance. It is always green mold. It is also always after birthing the cakes, I got cobweb mold in one jar during inocculation on only one occasion.

Is there any reason why contamination has become so prevelant, where it was not really an issue before? I actually take more precautions now than ever before, and should I be using disinfectant on the areas around my grow area?

If you are getting contams after you put your cakes into your terrarium, do what I did. When your terrarium has no cakes or anything in it. take it and give it a good cleaning (i used rubbing alchohol, but i see others like to use bleach, or lysol). Keep your terrarium closed after that, until your ready to start fruiting in it again. I had got trich inside of my terrarium before. I cleaned it out before My next batch and its good so far.

Gonna go out on a limb here; are you using the same package of BRF you were using before?

No, I just grind up brown rice.

I think I just need to clean more thorougly, with more bleach.

Aquariums make the worst possible fruiting chambers.  They fill up with stale air, which stimulates molds and suppresses mushroom mycelium.  If you insist on using an aquarium, lay it on its side and leave what was the top open about 20% to allow air to circulate.

Actually, I think you are right on that, I used to fan more often and I didn't have problems, so I think thats a huge part of it.
