Question about contamed jars...
    #8542752 - 06/19/08 10:50 PM (2 months, 15 days ago)

So my first grow attempt was an epic fail, all 10 of my jars consist of cobweb, nasty green mold, and nasty yellow mold...I want to puke when I look at them. Can I dump the cakes and salvage the jars? If so how would I go about sterilizing the jars and preparing them for a new set of cakes?

yes you can just soak them in bleach water and clean them really good....how did you sterilize your jars and syringes?

I basically inoculated them in the worst place possible, then had an interruption, and i'm sure I cross contaminated the jars...

Heres a pic of the beautiful trich...:mad2:

But I got 2 syringes for the price of one on the way and this time im making an extreme glovebox and its going to be doused with lysol, and I am going to be anal about the inoculation part.

Boiled them in steamy hot boiling water for 90 minutes, had no pressure cooker. Let them cool for a long ass time and such. I know 100% the inoculation fucked it up.

Looks good. Fruit and enjoy. should be fine.

Just kidding. I had the same problem. And then I started flaming my syringe and wrapping in alcohol each time I inoculated. ( I know, seems like a bit overkill, flaming each time.) but not a single contam after that.

Hope it helps.

Thats exactly how i'm doing it next time haha, flaming each time is actually necessary to prevent cross contamination, i only flamed once, contams got on it, then contaminated the whole damn project.

I don't actually know the answer to that.

I threw my contaminated cakes in the compost bin, being very careful about what and how I breathed (yes I wore a mask and gloves and washed my clothes in hot water after and hosed off outside and jumped straight in the shower and all that shit).

But I still have the jars.

They're still outside, exposed to direct sunlight.

I would, theoretically, like to salvage them, because I don't really believe in throwing away a perfectly good "whatever", but I think I'd have to do bleach and boiling water before I even considered bringing them back inside, and I must say, it's canning season, and jars are cheap.

You don't need bleach. All you need to do is rinse wash them with hot, soapy water and they are ready to use again. Everytime you use them they are going to be sterilised anyway.

Correct, wash with soap and water and then reload for the next cycle.  Bleach doesn't kill mold anyway.  If you want to neutralize the trich before dumping it out, simply drop the jars into a large pot of boiling water for an hour.  Then, open the jars and dump them out. Re-load and sterilize.

Sweet, I think i'll wash them, boil them for an hour, then prepare more substrate when my spores are in. Then do the process the right way.

Also, is this a safe way to dispose of the contaminated cakes?

I will wear a mask like a surgeons mask or whatever, that cheap one from wal mart, wear medical examination rubber gloves, put all jars in a plastic trash bag, trying to keep the end of the back shut, dump all of the jar contents into trash bag, remove jars and quickly drop into a bucket of hot soapy water, wash all the jars...

And then what should I do with the trash bag?

If you are concerned about spreading the spores you can boil/PC the contaminated jars to kill everything. Alternatively you can pour a little bit of water into them to dampen the cakes thereby hindering the ability of the spores to become airborne. Just throw them into a bag, seal it up and dispose of normally.

Most of the time mould spores are not that dangerous to require gloves, etc. Everyday you are surrounded by billions of airborne spores as you go about your daily life, breathing them in and all.
