Shroomery substrate discovery of the year (?)
    #8545631 - 06/20/08 08:35 PM (15 years, 9 months ago)

I work at a nursery (a tree/plant nursery), and have lately been assigned the job of loading all soil and mulch bags. I was looking at one I usually overlook today. It is called Nea Compost Posy Power. I usually dismissed it as some old ladies personal blend of secret crap for posys. Today, however, I read the bag closely after I loaded up about 3 of them just so I could become more familiar with the products we sell. This is where it gets quite interesting. The contents of the bag are as follows:

Cow Manure
Brewers Grain
Peat Moss
Gypsum
Lime

Whoa, sounds like one hell of a substrate! But it gets better:

"Steam Sterilized"
:eek:

So I took a bag home with me. It cost about $5 for a 30 pound bag of it. I get a PESA syringe soon and can't wait to start working with it. I may PC it anyhow because it comes in a plastic bag (like any soil) that is privy to breakage (and thus loss of sterile atmosphere).

Just thought it was an exceptional find, maybe I should start distributing it to our fellow shroomerites......

Comments welcome.

Update 7/17!

The jar of innoculant.

The Minitub (TM :P)

Open Minitub.

Nea's Posy Power packaging.

The Amazonian Syringe.

UPDATE 7/29-30

PINS :laugh:

The one that shall be called MONSTRO

:mushroom2: Until I get more progress...  :crazy2:

The minitub has been a complete success as far as a colonization chamber AND a fruiter. The only problem being height.... Needs work, but has potential as a Self-Contained Mushroom Unit for Growth, or "SMOG". Ha.

I thought sterelized substrates were an invitation for contaminants?

Will do,

I only have a single half pint jar available, so I will use that as sort of a pilot.

The PESA syringe should be here either tomorrow or early next week. It went out priority (2-3 days) on the 16th, the tracking number only shows that it's been accepted. I may have to use some of my panaeolus print (I would prefer some cubies).

As for the problem with inviting contams, I will most definitely sterilize the jar in the PC before I inoculate it.

I was wondering if I should possibly add something to loosen it up, perhaps perlite or verm? It seems dense.

And as far as hydration, I will probably add water in a 1:3 ratio with the Nea's. Does that sound right?

???

What the hell? What would that be used for in a nursery setting? Starting seedlings? Sounds a little weird.

Update this one.

From: http://www.posypower.net/history.htm
"JACKSON,Ohio-A soil amendment made from steam-sterilized horse manure is drawing praise from landscapers.
Known as Nea's Organic Compost or Nea's Posy Power (depending on the packaging), the manure first decomposes outdoors for 30 days. Weed seeds are then eliminated by steam sterilization. Additives include brewer's grain, gypsum, peat moss and lime.

The 80-day composting process is monitored by state-of-the-art computerized controls, according to Nea Henry, who is the president of the southeastern Ohio firm.
"We came up with our own entire process, and it worked," she recalls. "The procedures are very exact."

• It rebuilds worn out soil;
• acts as a fertilizer;
• holds moisture during drought conditions;
• adds micro-organisms;
• breaks down clay soil;
• Adds organic humus and
builds up sandy soil"

This stuff looks promising....

from the same link^
Nea's compost was born in the mushroom industry.

When she used the product on her father's crop, the yield was 6 lbs./sq. ft. when the national average for mushroom growing was just 1.79 lbs./sq. ft. Campbell's Soup was so impressed that it bought the company, but Henry kept the "super mix" patent.

sounds really good,  keep us updated

Sounds like Nea's compost is about to have a sudden increase in sales here in the next few weeks!:rofl: Are they a publicly traded company?  I should start buying stock in that company right now!

the only true setback to that recipe there is the lime... you dont need or want it in a substrate...

Don't count on the 'brewers grain' to serve to replace the cakes or grains you'll need to inoculate.

Many brands of store-bought compost work well.  However, as with all of them, you'll need to colonize grains or brf cakes first, and then use those to spawn the compost.  You won't be able to use it in jars and inoculate with a syringe.  Remember, compost is far less nutritious than grains, so needs to be used in bulk, which means trays of the stuff.

Also, you should read 'steam sterilized' to mean 'pasteurized'.  They were just trying to kill off the weed seeds that are always in horse manure. The word 'sterilize' to an outdoor gardener means something totally different than it does to us.
