Silver
    #8515673 - 06/12/08 02:25 PM (3 months, 27 days ago)

Actually, down the road silver will be much more valuable than gold. Silver isn't just ornamental, it's used in many things. Now, there are whispers of a "silver shortage". Whether true or not, who knows.
I wouldn't be surprised if our wonderful government makes owning silver illegal at some point. I'm loading up like there's no tomorrow (may not be). Mark my words........it's going to the moon. Anything under 20 bucks an ounce is a steal.

By the way.....you guys have a great board here

I wrote this up to convince my dad to buy silver.

Why invest in precious metals?
Prices are going up, Why?

U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in August 2007 a remarkably low inflation rate of only 1.7 percent.
The Federal Reserve has marked 2006-2007 inflation at around 2 percent.
Why has oil went from 24$ per barrel in 2000 to 124$ a barrel in 2008?
Why has gold went from 250$ an ounce in 2000 to 1000$ an ounce in 2008?
Why had silver went from 5$ an ounce in 2000 to 20$ an ounce in 2008?
Based on these numbers, the dollar has been inflated 400% in the past 8 years, and this trend is only going to continue…
The majority of independent studies have the true inflation rate at 10-20% annually, that’s 4 time higher then the Federal Reserve and U.S. Dep. of Labor reports!
These are real numbers! You can look them up on Google right now!

With the complexities of the U.S. economy, the federal reserve has done a decent job keeping the majority of this inflation from trickling down to the average person. Yet, we can start to see prices starting to go up EVERYWHERE, and its only going to get much worse. This isn’t meant to scare the reader, its meant to warn and protect before its too late…
Don’t believe me? Why hasn’t oil increased substantially in Europe in the past 8 years? hmmm

BUY GOLD AND SILVER!

The dollar held its strength by being the worlds reserve currency for decades. Countries around the world are starting to “diversify” their reserves, which basically means sell the majority of their dollars for other currencies such as the euro.
On top of that, Iran is opening its own oil bourse which will end the dollar domination in the oil sector, calling for more people to drop the dollar as reserve currency. The only other two oil bourse’s are in NY and London.
With all these dollars getting poured back into the U.S. economy, we can expect this inflation to increase. Gold and Silver will only increase, possibly double, in the next year or two alone! That’s a 50-100% interest rate on your investment!

I understand a lot of people out there have money in the stock market… take at least ¼(the more the better) of your stock portfolio and invest it in hard currency, silver and gold. You can buy it right offline and get it shipped to your house! Its only going to go up, time can be on your side if you invest TODAY!

Where?

Ingots are pretty large, no?  Probably worth several thousand dollars an ingot.  You can't just pay cash for that and not be perceived as shady as hell can you?

At the store where I work, some bought $1500 worth of paint in $20s...everybody thought that was suspicious as hell.  Of course, we all laughed about it and were more than happy to take the money, but speculations abound!

Yep.  Not a big deal.

> Ingots are pretty large, no?

Not necessarily.  Ingot is a fairly generic term that means a metal has been cast into a shape preparing it for further processing.  I've seen small bars of silver ingot going for $20.

you can pay anonomously with money orders at apmex.com

you can find a local coin dealer/pawn shop that deals precious metals. they usually give better deals to regulars.

The fundamental and technical indicators for silver are phenomenal right now.  Also look at palladium.  Buy buy buy.

Silver bullion chunks or low markup coins are best.  I like the Canadian Maple leafs they are of highest purity for silver.  The Maple Leafs are also available in a 1 oz palladium version from APMEX and your local coin dealer for reasonable markup/resale back to them if need be.

Buy buy buy.

Where?

Offline or online.

Question is, what do you want?
Here's what you want!

Silver goes in four sizes that appeal to three kinds of consumers:

1 oz Silver coins. Examples: Silver American Eagle, Canadian Silver Maple. No need to look any further. These are best recognized and most available. I recommend the Canadian coin over the US one for several reasons: It is slightly cheaper weight for weight and does not have the Dollar stigma. Thats important for Americans too because if the Gov't will pull back silver coins, they have the strongest legal possibility to do so with US dollar currency coins.

10oz Silver Bars. If silver goes through the roof, these are most liquid. These sell really well on eBay. Buy bars from recognized melter-assayers such as Johnson Matthey. Interesting for smalltime investers but if its not distinctly cheaper than coins, have coins instead. A 10oz bar could fit comfortably in a pack of cigarettes.

100oz Silver Bars These are the bars you want! They are large, but not too large, and stack really well. Not too large is not just important for hauling them, but also for liquidity. a 100oz bar is $1.700 now. Suppose Silver goes crazy and hits $80 a troy ounce. Then that bar will be worth $8.000 which reduces liquidity to the more wealthy buyers. You could unload a $8.000 bar on a coinshop if you announce it first, but not a $80.000 bar.

1.000oz Silver Bars The "industry bars" or big ingots you spoke of. These are the size of a loaf of bread and weigh 68.5 lbs apiece. (troy ounce = 31.1gr) Not fun to fill the trunk of your car with. Not very liquid either. Even if you have that kind of money I recommend getting many 100oz bars over a few 1.000oz bars.

Now we're gonna do gold! :smile2:

1/4 oz Gold Coin Only interesting for really really smalltime investors. Recommended are the South African 1/4 Krugerrand, Canadian 1/4 Gold Maple and the British Sovereign. Go for krugs, always the cheapest choice.

1oz Gold Coin This is THE Gold product you want. Even if you are going to own many kilos in gold, own them as 1oz "bullion" coins. It is most liquid, most recognized and very portable. $15.000 in gold coins fits into your hand, so its very portable. Major players are the American Gold Eagle, the South African Krugerrand and the Canadian Gold Maple. Go for the krug! They are always considerably cheaper and the gold is alloyed with a bit of copper so it doesnt dent or scratch easily. Here are some:

Best most recognized gold coin in the world. Jewelers are known to buy em and make gold jewelry with the metal alloy.

1kg Gold Bar The world standard gold bar. If you melt it down you could fill a pack of cigarettes with it, its about that much metal. I recommend you not to buy it, buy 1oz bullion coins instead. (32 coins = 1kg)

400oz Gold Bar The Industry Bar for the forklifters among us. about the size of a kids lunchbox. Only recommended if you have to convert millions at once.

So there you go

i still would like to add that for all of you that live in the western usa, you might want to look into prospecting for some actual silver and or gold. even industrial metals such as iron, copper, etc are going through the roof.

i recently bought a piece of land and discovered it came along with a VERY large (possibly hundred million ton+) body of iron ore. there are still large parts of the west that have never been explored.

I've been buying my gold and silver on bulliondirect.com.  They have a catalog you can buy from and an exchange that users can sell to or buy from one another.  You can buy anonymously, but any purchase over $10,000 is automatically flagged and reported to the IRS (no matter what you are buying).

capitalistic nomad is right about base metals going up in price.  As an alternative to digging up the ore, though, consider buying U.S. nickels and pre-1982 pennies.  A nickel, at todays nickel and copper prices, is worth about 5.7 cents (an instant 15.3% profit).  A pre-1982 penny, which is 95% copper, is worth something like 2.6 cents (instant 160% profit) .  The pennies have to be sorted, either by hand or using a Ryedale machine, because anything made after 1982 is made mostly of zinc.  This could be a pain in the ass if you want to amass a large stockpile of pre-82 pennies, but nickels have been made of the same metals since 1946, so you could just buy $100 boxes of nickels and not sort them.

This may sound crazy to some, but look at people who hoarded pre-65 90% silver quarters, nickels, and dimes.  They now sell for 12 times their face value and sold for much more than that in the 80's when silver was up to $50 per ounce.  Something to consider, anyways.

Question: Once you have some silver, how do you know when to sell, and how do you do the actual selling?

When you consider the time to be right. For instance silver is now at $18 an ounce. More than a few people think that in some years it will be at $40 or even $60.

There may be an unbelievable rise in the price of silver when a big player gets in on the silver market. In that case people like me will scream bloody murder in forums such as these

Keep your eye on the silver price and strategize. You don't have to sell ALL your silver mind you, a fractional sale can be more strategic, for instance selling high silver to buy low gold.

For small amounts, places like eBay are great to get a good price for your metal. Many metal merchants also buy back, but usually they offer less than you can get at eBay and similar sites.
