I.D. scans, I was wondering when it would get here and it finally has

I went to the gas station just a little bit ago to buy a pack of smokes.....I have gone to this place since I have lived at my current residence. These people know me, and know damn well that I am old enough to buy anything I want. So I walk up and like always greet the clerk and ask for what I want. He comes back and asks me to scan my I.D. , not just look at it. I declined and left angrily. What business is it of the government that I bought a pack of cigarettes? I'm I out of line, or misinformed? Is that kind of information not for the government? Isn't this another form of invasion of privacy by Big Brother? What are your views on this subject. I am anxious to hear what you all have to say. (Is this appropriate for this forum or should I have posted elsewhere?)

I'm pretty sure the scanner is just to validate your ID, and not hooked up to a network that analyzes your purchasing habits...
Just look at the gear- was it hooked up to a phone line, part of a POS?

I don't like it at all.
But I don't see it being a big brother thing by the govenrment. All it would do is show them where you shop and what you bought. Not that I accept their collection of this information, but I don't really care. Same as a credit card only more specific to an individual.

they pretty much just want to control everything and everyone. i think i'd be much better without a number in the long run. and, you can pretty much guarantee that it's only gonna get worse.

How many terabytes of storage would it require if the government recorded every transaction at every convenience store in America?
Not to mention, do you really think "big brother" is looking for your cigarette purchases?

Who are they, what do they gain from an analysis of your gas station purchases?

They are just for cashiers who are too stupid/cant be trusted to do the math. They have been around for a few years.

I agree that my purchase of a pack of cigarettes is insignificant. and perhaps it's not hooked up to a national database, but why all of a sudden would all the gas stations in town (I don't know about all but a good portion of the ones that I frequent) now do this? Is it to get Americans used to the idea so that nobody thinks it's a big deal? Where does it stop? I've been trying really hard not to be a "conspiracy Theorist" but lately everything that I have been reading about or watching documentaries about is coming true. Even a little bullshit event such as this one scares me to death.

Well, maybe the gas station is under contract with a credit card service/point of sale service that requires an ID scan with an over 18 purchase.
Liability is a bitch.

It certainly is.
I still think something is fishy though. I can just feel it in my gut. I hope you are right, sir.

I really doubt the storage would be problematic. Recording ID information and the purchase/location/time, et cet?
Anyways, I agree, I can't think of a good reason to want that information unless they just want to track folks.
But since credit checks do a decent job of that anyways, I doubt it.
Plus I worked at a bar that did that and I'd be surprised if they were allied w/ the government, excluding the police we paid off of course.

What was the bar's reason for doing so. Was it to validate the age of whomever wanted the drink?

They've been scanning IDs at 7/11s on Long Island for years now, its just there way of making sure the ID isn't fake/chalked.
I'd be scared when they issue the national ID cards...

Exactly... It is my belief that this is only a precursor to the national I.D. card. Getting people used to coughing it up, or not being able to purchase anything. It is just downright unnecessary and terrifying to me. We didn't need it before, why now?

Meh, My DNA and prints already find themselves in databases I abhor to think about. Another ID card will hardly make a difference to me.

Well its obvious the national ID is the precursor to the RFID chip. Then we are truly there slaves!

I agree. National ID doesnt change how hard it is to oppress people very much at all.

Yeah, they've been doing it around here for years (almost a decade now) as well. Same reason too, because there were a ton of kids using fake and altered ID's to buy beer and cigs so they started scanning them to verify if they were real so they were not liable if some underage kid came in and bought beer/liquor and ended up killing someone. Its pretty much to protect their own ass.

What if that I.D. card tracks and records every time you walk through a scanner? Granted, my DNA and fingerprints are in more than one database, but that is not my point. There is something called anonymity that used to thrive in this nation, even in my short lifetime, that is becoming less and less common. That is why I am so concerned about seemingly irrelevant stuff. It is that kind of thing that seems innocent enough till all of a sudden you are fucked, and in the words of George Carlin, walking around with a big red, white, and blue dick up your ass.
