reishi logs: need to be small? need to be in pots?

Hello-
I have a large forest on my property with lots of prime locations for mushrooms logs - shady and near streams. I also have a greenhouse with room for many pots, as I read reishi enjoy. I have ordered dowel spawn for oyster, shiitake, and reishi from FP and am trying to plan how to best use them.
I do have a lot of alder on the property, much of it already knocked down by beavers this spring so it seems ideal although I know I am starting a little late in the season.
What I am wondering is mostly regarding the reishi.
1) Should I really do it in tiny logs (16"?) instead of 4 logs like the shiitake?
2) Would it be happier in the greenhouse? Does it need shadecloth?
3) I have many 1/2 gallon pots, not so many 1 gallon. The 4" or so alder logs would fit fine in these smaller pots, but is that "enough" sand?
Any other tips?
thanks
