AT LEAST seven people have been arrested after raids on the homes of suspected drug dealers.
As the Observer went to press, 10 properties across the borough had been targeted as part of Operation Alligator, with more than £1,500 worth of drugs seized.
On Wednesday morning the Observer joined officers during a raid in Newbold.
The police smashed down the doors of two homes, although no drugs were found at either premises.
So far one man has been charged with possession of cannabis and five others are being questioned by police.
More raids were due to take place yesterday (Friday) and Thursday across the town.
Sgt Shirley Carter, who led the raid, said: "The public wants to know that we are taking action against drug dealers.
"They want to know that if they make a complaint we will act on that information.
"It might be a rival drug dealer, a neighbour suspicious of people coming and going, or even a family member who tips us off.
"Sometimes it might take a while for us to accumulate enough intelligence to gain a warrant but then we can strike.
"These people have no shame and it is hard-working families who lose out through crime that drug use brings."
The raids were part of a Greater Manchester-wide crackdown, which targeted more than 100 suspected dealers.
Chief Superintendent Peter Mason, head of the Rochdale division and leading the operation, said: "The use and sale of drugs causes devastating effects, which can have far reaching consequences.
"It can be quite surprising how many crimes committed relate back to drugs, from robberies or, in extreme cases, murder.
"This week we are focusing our activity on taking drugs off the streets by targeting the dealers who spread these dangerous substances."
