Nope. I wipe down the rim every few days to make sure dirt/debris doesn't get stuck, creating a ladder. Some people use oils/etc, but I haven't needed it.
I also keep them outside, only brought them in to take pictures because it's dark out, and flashes on the plastic is a pain.

Probably never, They rarely breed in confinement, or so I've noticed/read/heard.
Also, when using sand be sure to keep it moist, or the tunnels will collapse. The cotton ball was soaked in a mixture of syrup and water, which they seem to love (+1 for Aunt Jemima).

I didnt read the whole thread, but I don't think they are Males.. I'm pretty sure all ants are female except for a certain time of the year.

They are female. Males only breed, and die.
Although, it is breeding season.
(Those are def. females in the pic though.)

well that was a joke, it sounded like you were saying they changed sex like in that movie when they talk about frogs lol yah i did some reading apparently only drones are males, and they have wings just like queens which is something i didn't know. which would make finding a queen in the wild a bit more tricky
in the wild drones are around year round as far as i can gather

however during a certain time of year, the new queens have wings too and leave the nest to start new ones. i've seen a lot of people catch these for their ant hills.
i always figured i would just dig up a queen from a nest with about 20-30 workers if i really wanted to start a hill.
i had one of those gel ones but i don't think they're as good as they say.. they made a few tunnels and then they all got wiped out by sickness or something. they barely lasted 2 weeks. then i b ought another one and they lasted about as long.
i was once thinking about designing and building my own ant hill and making it out of glass.. but i doubt i'd go through the trouble now.
regarding drones: their life span is about 2 or 3 days.. these ones will leave the nest and fly around and the new queens follow and mate in the air and then the drones die. their only purpose is mating..

yeah but you can't get a queen with it. with the queen the entire structure of the hill changes. they'll store food, store larvae, some ants even make a 'graveyard' and pile all the dead bodies in there.. unless the ant is sick then they move it really far away from the ant hill so the others dont get infected.

I do have a queen. They aren't so easy to mix up with the drones. The drones die Immediately after mating, and the queens rip off their wings soon after. (They live off the muscles used for flying for the time they lay/brood/wait for workers to bring them food.)
You can't possibly expect a queen to live in a gel farm, or one of those "uncle milton" deathtraps.
Use an old jar if you must, improvising isn't hard. (Just be sure to keep the substrate moist.) Plaster setups are also about as easy as it gets, with hardly any maintenance. I can send you designs if you'd like.
I also keep mine outside in the garden area, so other bugs land in there with them, and save me the hassle of feeding (although some sugar or syrup water on a cotton ball doesn't hurt.).
About now is the time to go queen hunting.
[Edit:The setup I posted pictures of cost me a total of three bucks. One of those dollars was for a spray bottle that I didn't need.]
