Washington D.C. - the unhappy city

Here comes a rant:
So I'm livin in DC right now - doing the 9-5 (actually it's 9-6, those lying bastards) and loving every minute of it. The part that astounds me is that I get stares all the time - on the subway, walking the streets...everywhere. Not for any reason other than I'm constantly smiling. Not a closed mouth curvature of the lips - full on teeth blazin SMILE.
For those who know me - this is nothing new, I enjoy smiling becuase I feel it truly makes the world a better place (cliche', i know). But these people don't know me - they only see me for anywhere from 5sec - 5min. Why is a smile so intriguing? I'll tell ya why - because nobody else is doing it. It's sad to see a crowd of faces, whether it be on the street, the metro, or in the office - and have not a single smile.
I will continue to smile, but I'm starting to worry that this environment that lacks joy will seep into me from all sides and take away my steadfast smile. I hope It doesn't
My rant is over, I just needed to get that off my chest.

From living in the DC/Baltimore almost all my life I know why the people stare at someone smiling. They're trying to figure out who you just fucked over and want the scoop. Plus, they want to make sure it wasn't them that got the fucking.

Keep up the good work.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern himself with his shadow on the wall. Speak what you think now in hard words, and to-morrow speak what to-morrow thinks in hard words again, though it contradict every thing you said to-day. -- `Ah, so you shall be sure to be misunderstood.' -- Is it so bad, then, to be misunderstood? Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood.
~ R.W. Emerson, "Self-Reliance"

People can be happy in their own right and not show it. But when they see someone out in public grinning like a moron for no reason, it's reasonable to assume that they are suffering from some sort of mental retardation.
That's why you get the strange looks.
