Yeah, I have vista but mine didn't come with that. i was pissed when I saw it in a best buy store on one of their computers. Thats OK though, because I ended up buying "Chess Master: Grandmaster Edition", so its all good.

i only read the OP post but i disagree.
i think chess is a fairly specialized game with limited real world applications, beyond what you could learn from almost any game.

It really depends on how you are able to apply it. It can teach you about strategy and how it can be used to achieve success. Teach you to think ahead many moves in advanced. Teach you the hidden value of things many people over look. Like how pawns are an essential and important part of the game even though they are "weakest" pieces. Its a beautiful and intricate game. Some people can apply the principles to their life. It just depends on how able you are see it as a metaphor.

i've been trying to directly perceive the "tao of strategy" for awhile. the best i can come up with is all situations or games have specific rules that don't appear to be connected.
in other words i have not figured out the secret of universal strategy at all, so i can't be sure that there is one. so i don't think games like chess has real world applications, because anything you would want to do is situation specific.

To a large degree yes. But i think there are some underling principles which apply to a lot of situations. Like the ability to think ahead which is central to chess is useful in almost all strategic situations.

I would have to disagree. i think any game that requires dedicated thoughts, planning, and precision in action is going to increase your mental capacity for those traits. It is obviously up to each person to decide how much they allow the game (or any other) to influence other aspects of their lives.

I would agree if you specified games that require mostly pure or all skill/strategy/etc, and not luck. The more a game requires luck the harder it is gain real insight from it.
Take the child's card game "war". It requires entirely luck if played correctly. You can learn about yourself and life etc from playing, yes but the amount I feel is more limited.
Games that benefit greatly from a lot of dedication and skill such as football teach you a lot. Chess is one of these games.

Also, DimensionX this is not meant to be insulting, but I have found that the better a person is at chess the more they are likely to agree with what I wrote. Do you know your ELO rating, or have you played quite a bit? ever gone to a tournament or bought a chess program. Well A simple way to find out would be to play me on yahoo like I did "mickdawg666". I mean, I have no clue how good you are. for all I know you are a grandmaster. But its just something for you to consider about how much knowledge is behind your opinion.
btw, we should play again, mickdawg666.

There are subtle ways to cheat at that game (like by paying attention to the order you place cards in the secondary pile). Now THAT'S a game that can teach a kid some life lessons.

1200 is pretty decent for online chess. Today I'd be lucky to keep that rating, although in my heyday of chess (when I was 12 or so), I could keep a 1500 steady.

You are right, my bad. I should pay half as much attention to what I'm writing as I do on the chess board.

Oh yeah, has anyone ever played chess high? I decided to try one time and it fucking sucks. NEVER PLAY CHESS HIGH. Basically, pot tends to fuck up your linear thinking. For most people. Thats why people lose their train of thought. And when you play chess, it's very often about linear thinking. looking several moves ahead, over and over again, choosing an option, then repeating. I hate playing chess high, and never plan to do it again. It's like eating pickles and ice cream. Another combination best left separate.

I kicked some 1500 rated chick's ass, and then she accused me of cheating with one of those programs. I was high (of course I know the game back and forth so well, there wasn't much critical thinking actually involved).

Anyone who listens closely to Wu-Tang's lyrics will hear all sorts of references to chess and chess strategy. Those guys love the game. Through them and other areas I have come to understand that chess is a powerful game, however I've never had the patience to learn proper strategy. Can anyone recommend a book or website that gives a basic introduction to chess strategy?
