America is not the home of racism. America's history, it's true, is built largely on extreme racism: first the complete annihilation of native peoples, then slavery, then segregation, and now de facto segregation and a mainstream culture which promotes stereotypes and division.
But...
You cannot tell me America is the most racist nation in the world. Most Western European nations are just as bigoted against their minority immigrant populations as Americans are to Latinos, and usually more openly; and many Middle Eastern and Asian nations have extremely racist cultures.

Every western country is racist.. Over here everyone bashes the polish (we've had a surge of polish immigrants).
The middle east is indeed very racist / sexist etc.. but then again they don't have the diverse culture that western society does.. Iraqis may hate the Iranians but there is only a minority in each country (which is probably due to the fact that they are extremely intolerant )
In a large western country you can witness racism every single day.. I mean there are even fascist groups that kill people just because they're from a different race of people.
I guess the worst aspect about it all is just how casual all this is.. I mean for a lot of people the word nigger or some of inflammatory term is part of their everyday vocabulary

It's hard to call the western world racist when the eastern countries are all mono-raced (do I detect racial "cleansing" there?)

Hah.. so I get a bad rating for a commonly held view. I'm not a racist but I guarantee you that even though Barack Obama is obviously the best candidate for president (i.e. the most human) he will not win the presidency because he is black, this is unfortunately how it has always been.
America, and in fact, the western world is not ready for a black president..
As for America being a racist country, I use the word America as being the forefront of the western world. The whole western world is racist and America is a particularly good example.

I don't deny that the middle east is extremely racist, but I think you'll have to agree that America (and the whole western world) is pretty fucking racist.

Thats my point
Heh I missed the obvious hypocrisy there; I mean I don't go out hating on people of different colours for no reason, but I can't help following certain stereotypes and inheriting certain prejudices.
However, I do try to avoid being racist by looking at everyone as equal.. until they open their mouths (then I can judge them )

Yes, my statement was not meant to imply that those who acknowledge their racism are not otherwise liars.

Thats along the lines of my thoughts. Most countries in the world dont even accept multi-culturalism! They have a mono-culture, and a mono-race. They are the most racist countries in the world.
The western hemisphere hasnt seen racial genocide in generations. This is because of the multi-ethnic makeup of every single country in the western hemisphere. In europe, africa, middle east, asia they have ethnic genocide happening right now (or at least in our generation). You wont see nearly as much, or any at all, racial diversity in the politics of the eastern hemisphere (with few exceptions).
The reason people mistakingly believe "America is the most racist nation" is because of our media. Our media, rightly so, hunts out and focuses on race issues. They are constantly brought to light and exposed to the whole world. If somebody in the south drives around with a noose in his truck (see Jeena six), or a presidential candidate calls asians gooks (see McCain), or a different presidential candidate's preacher slurs Italians and Jews (see Obama)... whatever the current race issue is, it is brought to the forefront debated and discussed. This doesnt happen in the old world, where they are mono-cultured. They dont discuss their racist problems, because to them they aren't problems.
So while America is flamed for not ending slavery soon enough, slavery is still rampant in N. Africa and Asia. While America is looked down upon for unequal pay for minorities, places like Dubai embrace unequal pay unapologetically. While America is demonized for not coronating a minority for president because he is a minority, the old world continues to have governments made up 100% of the ruling ethnicity. Very few countries have had the ruling ethnicity, willingly and forcefully fight for the rights of the minority. America is one of the few who have.
Modern multi-cultural countries are the least racist in the history of the world. And leading that charge is Canada and America. If you are going to live as a minority, there is no better time and place to do it than modern Canada and America.
-------------------- Behold yon miserable creature. That Point is a Being like ourselves, but confined to the non-dimensional Gulf. He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

Firstly, that's not really a fair statement. I can agree to the extent that everyone is racist by today's definition of the word. Because these days, just distinguishing white from black is racist.
I work at a convenience store. If I was robbed, the first thing I'd tell the cop was the race. Is that racist of me? By today's standards, you could say so. But I don't buy it. I'd say "white guy" just as quick as I'd say "black woman." I don't see any prejudice there. Just discrimination. Which is a trigger word nowadays. But really, being able to discriminate one from another shouldn't be looked down on. That's just stupid.
So I don't exactly agree.
And on the topic of news programs.... A long time ago, there weren't only 3 or 4 major news stations nationwide. Every state had at least one local news program, and they talked about things that were important. It was for the people.
Just thought I'd put that in. That alone should tell you something about the shape our nation is in today. I mean, Damn. We're in a tight spot.

There is a fundamental difference between the way the eastern world operates and the way the western world operates. Unfortunately the eastern world still depend heavily on religion.. which is the cause of most of this ethnic cleansing and discrimination.
This was true for the western world as well; they saw people of different cultures and immediately think 'savages' or 'heathens'. As the western world become less dependent on religion the blatent racism became less accepted, and what we know today as racism comes into play. Ok, so we don't kill whole races of people (anymore) because we're 'above' that, but discrimination is still very prevalent in mainstream culture. To some extent it is even glamourised.
I guess it appears more apparent, as you said; due to the media representation of events.. if someone in the public eye makes a racist remark then its blown out of proportion.
I suppose that what I should have said is that america is one of the most racist nations in the western world, due to the way your country was founded and its bloody history.

I'm not racist.
Explain how this must be a lie? What qualities must I have that demonstrate I've lied about the above statement?
Sorry to bump this thread, but I think this is a dumb statement and underscores a common and frustrating ignorance of what some popular buzz words mean historically, in the literature, and among those who study the surrounding phenomena.

agreed on both counts.
I don't think Oreilly is fair in the sense that he provides equal coverage to things critical of the administration and US policies as he does to his pet interests, but it is his show, and its not really a "news show"- more news commentary.
And I don't think he's fair in that he presents the best people to argue against his position, or covers the meritorious arguments against his position in a fair light, but he does put on people critical of them and allows them to reasonably say their piece.
So while I think he's kind of an ass and I disagree with him, he is MUCH more reasonable than other conservative commentators and he DOES give the other side reasonable opportunities to rebut his contentions.
I think people treat Oreilly unfairly. He seems like a decent guy in terms of how he covers issues in general, and his show is pretty fair. Though its slanted to his viewpoint, this is to be expected in this type of show. I really think Oreilly is lumped together w/ other conservative idiots when he doesn't deserve to be.
And yes, Hannity appears to argue purely to endorse his perception of his audiences beliefs, whether or not the points he raises are fair. He often seems to unfairly represent contrary opinions and doesn't seem to care about the merit of the individual argument, so long as he gets to rail on "liberals"- whatever that means.

who cares, any news network is biased, at least your watching one with an equal share of liberals independents and conservative LIARS... it really is better than most strictly left or right stations tho...you hear both views more often than just one view strictly on fox...IT IS RIGHT WING DontGetMeWrong... more R than L...but Id say usually one of each, a righty and lefty... is present to argue n debates on fox...i have noticed it on there many times more than not rather on other stations choosing one side and sticking with it...
