Anyone here Sail?
    #8417304 - 05/18/08 05:15 PM (4 months, 22 days ago)

Would like some information, or to hear stories!

The summer after i return, i am going to look into learning to sail independently and perhaps buy a small boat myself.. (ideally)

However, i know practically nothing about it besides reading ¨the boy who sailed around the world alone¨ and some stuff from colin angus (guy who just rode his bike around the world.)

Sailing is probably the most beautiful way to spend to time, and to live. Cruising from port to port, sleeping under the dome of stars. It seems crazily expensive to get started, though.

Obviously, you'll need a boat.

When I was little I used to sail very small "Sunfish" and "lasers". They were small, and manageable enough for little kids to handle.

My father had a 22 foot tanzer that you could spend the night on and take 1-2 day trips on.

I think "laser" is the brand, they make a variety of small sailboats. Many can be transported on the top of a car.

I'm a bit curious about this myself.

I don't have the means to make it happen, but I'd still kind of like to know how one would get started. For one, where do you start when you're trying to wrap your mind around handling the sails and the rigging?

I'm sure modern innovation has simplified sail-handling, and I know your average single mast ketch rigged private sloop isn't exactly going to pose the same challenges as, say, a 3 masted polacre... but I'm sure that as I am now I'd still step on deck of one of these things, look at the yards, then to the ropes, then back to the yards, and just stare blankly at them like an idiot with my mouth hanging open. Hell I probably wouldn't even be able to work out how to handle a junk rig.

Some of the more complicated anchoring methods seem like they'd be an interesting thing to learn, too.

That is assuming that, in this hypothetical scenario, I managed to get the sails to stop luffing long enough to get anywhere worth anchoring at.

I've been researching liveaboard sailing since 8th grade middle school. It's always been a dream of mine to circumnavigate the globe on my own vessel, living on board, having my floating home with me wherever I go, braving the high seas.

One of these days!
