Several states look into moving DXM behind counters

 Walk into any grocery store or gas station and you'll find plenty of it.
Dextromethorphan, or DXM, is a key ingredient in 120 different cold
medicines.
Marvel Welch said "They have it over the counter, kids can just walk up, either
Buy it, or take it."
And on the Cherokee Indian Reservation, they want that changed.
"For the safety. For the safety of my children," said Welch.
Because children all over the reservation are using the over-the-counter drug to get high.
Dr. Michael Todet said "Dextromethorphan can cause the heart rate to rise, it can cause hallucinations, and when used at high doses, it can even lead to death.
It's a tragedy tribal leaders are hoping to avoid, with a strict new ordinance.
The law would make it illegal to sell medicines containing DXM to minors and require stores to put those medicines behind the counter.
Chief Ben Reed of the Cherokee Police Department said "It'll just give us a leg up, so we can start looking for it for enforcement. Number one as a deterrent, and number two being able to address it when we see it."
If approved, the law will be among the first of its kind in the United States – a statistic Tribal Chief Michele Hicks couldn't be more proud of.
"This just goes to show as we grow and as things arise, that we're on top of it, and we're addressing it - out front rather than behind," said Hicks.
Now he just hopes the rest of the country follows suit before another child gets hurt or dies.
Hicks said, "Because its not just a Cherokee issue. This is a national issue.
Several states are considering similar legislation but they're meeting strong resistance from drug manufacturers.
The same thing happened two years ago, when the government decided to put pseudo-ephedrines behind the counter.
The tribal council will vote on the proposed ordinance next month.

No way man, I WANT the government to tell me what i can and cant do, its just too hard to think for my self, let alone try and actually be involved in my kids lives.....
On a more serious note, this will not prevent anything. The kids arent just going to toss up their hands and say, "oop, ok well i guess we cant get high, lets go play some ball."
Please, they are just going to find another, probably more dangerous way to get high. And DXM itself isnt what kills most all of the OD cases, its the ignorance of the kids, taking OTC's that have other shit in them.
Education is the best option here, not more laws, rules and regulations. All they do is create more criminals.

I did this once by accident with Robitussin and let me tell you there is nothing fun about it. I remember being sick and just took a bunch of it (5 times the recommended dose) and I was fucked. There are a lot of better ways to get high than this stuff

i rely have no comment on this today. i think people should be abel to have possession of all drugs no matter what. but for that people would need something called....oh what is it......its that one thing that we use to need.......FUCK......re......OH YEAH responsibility.....what ever happened to that?

This is just an Ingine problem. I am not a rampant racist, or think I'm superiour to others due to my race or impecable genetics- I think it's terrible what we did to the natives, but seriously in my entire life i have never met a sober indian.
Around here they fill garbage bags with gasoline, and stick their heads inside & inhale the fumes... These people would lick rusty, used, HIV-infected needles if they thought they could get high....
