man what a great post
I just recently got back into chess about 2 months ago and I love the game. I nearly agree with everything you said abot the correlations between chess and life, AegentMonty. I feel inspired to play chess more often now...
I feel like playing chess now

Through them and other areas I have come to understand that chess is a powerful game, however I've never had the patience to learn proper strategy. Can anyone recommend a book or website that gives a basic introduction to chess strategy?
Absolutely. Comment back if you read this, otherwise I'll send it to you in a comment as well.
I'll start with some users on YouTube that make some wonderful chess videos using a screen capture program. Some are more advanced some are not. I suggest looks at their profile, going to "view all videos" (or something similar) and going to their first few videos. Look at the name and look for anything that sounds beginning-ish.
The types of videos these people make are all similar. One type is they will just record themselves playing a game online with someone, and as they are thinking, they will talk about what they are doing. a few wont talk enough, so it might get boring, but use that time to analyze the board yourself. Other videos are analysis of games they previously played, or professional games they studied. The last type is videos about openings and endgame lines. I wouldn't suggest those to anyone except people who are serious about chess.
I highly recommend these users: (both of these users have at least one video about basic tactics, watch them) http://www.youtube.com/user/jj32768 http://www.youtube.com/user/jrobichess
Videos for anyone who is already pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/user/GreenCastleBlock http://www.youtube.com/user/brucewallace2
Other videos http://youtube.com/user/zibbit http://youtube.com/user/canstein2 http://youtube.com/user/mjshark http://youtube.com/user/slattster http://youtube.com/user/sagacious00004
Some websites:
wikipedia pages on chess, check them out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_tactics http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_strategy
This website has a huge amount of videos to watch, no matter how good you get, you'll still find this website helpful: http://www.chessvideos.tv/forum/viewforum.php?f=28&sid=54b6d13ac40271b99ecb89cf54d19939

Programs: there are various chess programs you can buy or download, but if anyone wants to learn chess, I highly recommend "ChessMaster: Grandmaster Edition". They have great interactive tutorials, with great detail and discussion on strategies and tactics. Josh Waitzkin(sp?) is the guy that is talking (for most of the videos) and he has a great voice for it, its just calming and relaxed, and not annoying, etc.
As for books, I would just recommend you look at that other stuff first, especially Chessmaster: Grandmaster ed. If you are willing to spend money (or get it off a torrent site).
If you do get a book, Id suggest getting one that is in "Algebraic Notation" instead of "Descriptive Notation". (a quick google search or visit to wikipedia will explain the difference).
If you have any questions, just let me know.

For most people. Thats why people lose their train of thought. And when you play chess, it's very often about linear thinking. looking several moves ahead, over and over again, choosing an option, then repeating. I hate playing chess high, and never plan to do it again. It's like eating pickles and ice cream. Another combination best left separate.
lol ive done that a few times before. For some reason when i get high i feel like playing but once i start i quickly realize it was a bad idea.

Yeah same here. I want to, but I know I shouldnt. SO I havent tried again, hopefully I wont.
Getting high makes you lose control of your ability to think linearly. think of thinks in succession and order, which is why is hard to read or listen to someone talk for a long time, unless its broken up. and chess is all about succession and moves influencing each other.

Hey everybody, sorry to bring back old posts but this is nice and I need to mention this! I've been playing chess on and off for a long time, since I was 6. Only a few years back did I get the real bite and since then I've gotten pretty good. Here are two very good resources :
www.chess.com
Duh! Great website for playing "correspondence" chess. You can have up to 3 days for a single move. Great if you want to improve your game!
www.freechess.org
Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). It's a very big, free chess server, very professional, lots of options; can be a bit complicated to use (with the command prompt) at first but it's extremely versatile.
I'm 'isaaceinstein' on both servers. Around 1800 rating. I also play 'blind chess': chess without a board, using the coordinates only. Rating probably around 1200 with my eyes closed. Anyone who wants to play me blind can, on FICS; just challenge me...
