what would you do?  A friend is expecting an inheritance and wants to start a nonprofit, something to do with sustainable agriculture or feeding people with good local organic food. We are having trouble nailing down a solid plan. Any ideas? Even nonfood related, what kind of nonprofit would you form?

You could start a non-profit crop circle research organization. I don't know what you would do though.

You could buy some land with that and organically farm it for feeding people in your area.
Depends on where you're at, but in some places like Montana you could buy a large acreage for 50k.

I think that theres lots of white trash ignorant rednecks that can really use a college education, and I truly believe that there should be an organization to send white trailer trash to college. So
1. they become smarter.
2. they can get a good job and no longer be white trash red necks.
3. have children who are not white trash red necks because they are no longer white trash red necks.

That is what we are considering doing, but land ain't cheap, and farming in general doesn't make alot of money. We are thinking maybe a community supported agriculture type program, where you feed the local residents. They pay something like 30 bucks a month and get tons of fresh veggies every two weeks in the summer and fall. But what do you do the rest of the year? And what about building a structure like a house for this property, 50,000 only gets you so far.

Oh, seeing where you're at 50k probably won't go far at all.
You could rent office space and form your NFP or NP organization by filing the appropriate forms with your state, and collect and solicite donations and use the money for feeding the people in your area.
I like the education thing ados said, except 50k would only go so far in paying redneck tuition, and you have to consider beer and nascar money.

CSA is a good idea, I don't know where you are exactly but a temperate climate might be able to produce stuff year round.
It looks like your not urban but you could think about a community garden. People who don't have much of a yard pay for a space and they come and garden on the weekends, etc. Then they talk to each other and stuff.
You could install tree bogs for people.
