I think its over exaggerated. But...it can be possible, taking a hallucinogen daily for a while might not be good for your brain.

Depends on who you are. Doing just about anything for a long period of time (and I'm not just talking about drugs, I'm talking about anything) for certain people can cause 'mental illness'.

The Blunt Truth: Drug Increases Brain Cell Growth
ST. JOHN'S, NFLD. ( CUP ) - Supporters of marijuana may finally have an excuse to smoke weed every day, as a recent study in the Journal Of Clinical Investigation suggests that smoking pot can make the brain grow.
Though most drugs inhibit the growth of new brain cells, injections of a synthetic cannabinoid have had the opposite effect in mice in a study performed at the University of Saskatchewan. Research on how drugs affect the brain has been critical to addiction treatment, particularly research on the hippocampus.
The hippocampus is an area of the brain essential to memory formation. It is unusual because it grows new neurons over a person's lifetime. Researchers believe these new cells help to improve memory and fight depression and mood disorders.
Many drugs - heroin, cocaine and the more common alcohol and nicotine - - inhibit the growth of these new cells. It was thought that marijuana did the same thing, but new research suggests otherwise.
Neuropsychiatrist, Xia Zhang and a team of researchers study how marijuana-like drugs, known collectively as cannabinoids, act on the brain.
The team tested the effects of HU-210, a potent synthetic cannabinoid similar to a group of compounds found in marijuana. The synthetic version is about 100 times as powerful as Tetrahydrocannabinol ( THC ), the high-inducing compound loved by recreational users.
The researchers found that rats treated with HU-210 on a regular basis showed neurogenesis - the growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus. A current hypothesis suggests depression may be triggered when the hippocampus grows insufficient numbers of new brain cells. If true, HU-210 could offer a treatment for such mood disorders by stimulating this growth.
Whether this is true for all cannabinoids remains unclear, as HU-210 is only one of many and the HU-210 in the study is highly purified.
"That does not mean that general use in healthy people is beneficial," said Memorial University of Newfoundland psychology professor William McKim. "We need to learn if this happens in humans, whether this is useful in healthy people and whether THC causes it as well."
McKim warns that marijuana disrupts memory and cognition. "These effects can be long-lasting after heavy use," he said. "This makes it difficult to succeed academically if you use it excessively." (This statement is contradicted by study that cannabis has no long term effect on cognition and memory. Ed.)
"Occasional light use probably does not have very serious consequences. [But], there is some evidence that marijuana smoke might cause cancer," he cautioned. (Actually there is not one reported case of lung cancer from marijuana world-wide, see LegaliseIt.com Ed.)
Still, the positive aspects of marijuana are becoming more plentiful as further research is done. McKim says it's not surprising that THC and compounds like it could have medicinal effects.
"Many have been identified," he said. "It stimulates appetite in people with AIDS, it is an analgesic and blocks nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and it treats the symptoms of glaucoma."
The research group's next studies will examine the more unpleasant side of the drug. (I thought all of this work was already done by NIDA? Ed.)

It can definitely exaggerate or bring out latent mental illness, but I don't think it will exactly cause something that wasn't already there in the first place.

I never had a problem with weed, and I have never met anyone that didn't enjoy weed and have some positive effect on their life.

No, it won't randomly cause mental illness. Depending on how weed affects you, I could certainly see smoking everyday creating chronic anxiety problems and stuff like that. But if you feel fine, keep smokin'.

Oh this scare is nothing new. Even Herodotus (a really old Turkish/Greek dude) knew about cannabis.
Look, some puritans see or hear stoners talking weird and acting weird, and say "That drug is poisoning their minds with independant thought". That's a mental illness that is.

I believe it is true. I believe this from personal experience because i have had a psychotic episode. I have no family history of schizophrenia, and i also do not have schizophrenia. I was not alone, my psychiatrist was treating people who had psychotic episodes from weed every day. It is generally accepted among the psychiatric community that weed does cause psychotic illness. And they do not think in the case of psychosis that it is bringing our a latent problem, they think it specifically causes the problem by altering the chemistry of your brain. It won't happen to everyone, but it happens to enough people that people should be educated about it.

I've experienced heightened anxiety as a result of daily smoking. I've stopped for now, might have a toke in a few months but the awesome effects that i was so used to were just being weighed down by the anxiety and paranoia.
This was smoking bongs as well, never used to get it from joints. I hate bongs.

Here is a link to the CNN story reporting this ridiculous study, Which contains the following:
The researchers said they couldn't prove that marijuana use itself increases the risk of psychosis, a category of several disorders with schizophrenia being the most commonly known.
There could be something else about marijuana users, "like their tendency to use other drugs or certain personality traits, that could be causing the psychoses,"
Sounds like a crock to me...

There are a lot of bullshit marijuana studies out there. If it was legal we would probably know a lot more about how it causes psychosis. I personally think the government propaganda has back fired. Its like the boy who cried wolf, they've told so many lies about the dangers of pot that no one will believe the true problems it can cause.

i wasnt sayin it didnt cause problems i was sayin that when you got problems that have built up and throw something else in the chemical you tend to short circuit
it happend twice to me the time it fucked me over tho there was no short circuit jus a kinda fizzzz

I've had my share of psychotic breaks... But all of mine were related to prescribed psych meds. It's why I choose pot now as a matter of fact. Marijuana is a world class anti-depressant in my book. The worst side effects I've ever experienced are the munchies!!

Technically substance abuse and dependence is a mental illness. After taking a psychology class I realized I had every symptom of substance dependency due to marijuana.
