what all would happen if i paid the $10?
would all my old post be changed to my new name?
when people browse my new user name, will they come across my posts made under the old name?

It's mandatory - the entire system is automated. The only place your original name will show up is if someone quoted you before your name was changed, it will still say "LayYouIn said:" in their post.
