I was thinking about how much does it cost to fire it just one time.

Less than it costs to invade another country for one day. Not knowing where the power comes from, it is hard to know what the cost is. If the power comes from hydroelectric, then the cost would be very low.

A figure I saw reported said that one day's operation of the LHC will output an amount of data greater than the total contents of the internet.
I'm debating whether I think that's even possible, let alone feasible.

Apparently;
Quote:
Fifteen petabytes of data will be generated each year in particle physics experiments using CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, due to be launched in May 2008.
Supposed to be sourced from this article
By contrast, the Internet WayBackMachine is supposed to contain nearly 2 petabytes of data and grows approximately 20 terrabytes a month.

By the way, unless I am way off (it's early, yet), it seems according to those stats that only roughly 30 terrabytes of data will be generated daily at the LHC, which was ONCE more than the internet, but not anymore.

High energy physicists using SI? Bravo to them, now if they could only convince my teacher to do the same...
-------------------- Behold yon miserable creature. That Point is a Being like ourselves, but confined to the non-dimensional Gulf. He is himself his own World, his own Universe; of any other than himself he can form no conception; he knows not Length, nor Breadth, nor Height, for he has had no experience of them; he has no cognizance even of the number Two; nor has he a thought of Plurality; for he is himself his One and All, being really Nothing. Yet mark his perfect self-contentment, and hence learn his lesson, that to be self-contented is to be vile and ignorant, and that to aspire is better than to be blindly and impotently happy.

BUMP!
They've started cooling some parts of the LHC down the several degrees above kelvin that they will be operating at.
I can't wait! The knowledge that we get from the experiments done at the LHC will probably be the most important discoveries in recent memory. At least, to those of us who are science nerds.

Woohoo! 10 kiloamps! That's a lot of AA batteries!
The quadrupole and main dipole circuits have been powered up to 10,200 amps in Sector 4-5. Sector 5-6 is currently being cooled and will be the next to undergo electrical tests, which will be stepped up over the next few weeks.
