this waterfall?

or La Mina Falls?

There are a few different waterfalls in El Yunque but La Mina is the most well-known/visited. On the trails to La Mina Falls there are 3 active Psilocybes that grow. The season has just begun too.

You shoulda looked for Psilocybe caribea and/or portoricensis while walking the trails. They seem to like to grow right along the trails on the slopes and embankments of mud.

The sporeworksgallery.com composite finished. I didn't know it at the time but this fills in the last active Section in the Psilocybes (according to Guzman) that I was lacking, Section Brunneocystidiatae. Now I have at least one specimen of them all except Section Subaeruginosae which doesn't seem to actually exist.

I also found these images which show the characteristic mustard yellow mycelium at the stem base. Unfortunately I was only able to recover the thumbnails at google images. So kinda tiny but still something.

Culture attempts underway. As expected, the gill fragments are very contaminated but after 3 days there appears to be a small area of good growth amongst the slimes and molds. This is a very fresh sample so the chances of success are pretty high. Time will tell.

A quick update. I've got what seems to be many points of germination from a plate that was streaked with a gill.

Transferred a few pieces to a new plate. Let's hope for the best.

Looks good. Here is what it will probably look like after transfering, assuming I have isolated the right stuff.

After a few transfers I think I have a good single sector isolate to play with.

Here's the plate I got the isolate from. It has alot of bacteria on the outer edges. This is VERY VERY weak dextrose agar.

The sectors are shown. Red #1 was the isolate I chose. The plate will go in the fridge until I get more plates to transfer the other sectors to.

Here's the single isolate on 2% MEA.

Here's a backlit picture.

What looks like a sector to the lower right is from me sliding the transfer piece across to knock it out the scalpel. The small spot merged perfectly with the main body of mycelium when they met. No zone of ihibition ever formed.

I'll try to fruit this isolate first. Probably on barley spawned to coir/zoodoo or cased grass seed.
