Cycling back home (small update)

Its awesome, i am so glad i gave up my life back home and commited myself to a few months+ of unknown adventure!
3 weeks in cuzco living with a family learning spanish was not so great - young radical w. traditional catholic family = not the greatest combo..
Cuzco is super touristy and at all times someone is trying to sell you something. The nightclubs play crappy music, and everything is inauthentic-touristy.. the only good thing about it is its proximity to Machu Picchu
I paid 205 dollars for a night in a hotel, train, entrance and tour and it was totally worth it. Despite being owned by a japanese corporation, inside the grounds was totally authentic and not touristy (no signs, vendors, garbage cans, bathrooms, etc. - just the city as it stood.)..
Anyways, ive been cycling 5 days now - passed a 4338m mountain pass where i camped in the frigid temperatures and down through rural hard indiginous subsistance farmer communities for many hours..
Nailed out a 145kms yesterday and reached lake titicaca today.. I am currently hostelled in some small town within 80kms of the Bolivian boarder, which i will cross tommorow and stay in copacabana and explore the lake, before going to la paz where i hope to go mountaineering before i ride the worlds most dangerous road in the yungas and head the salar de uyuni the biggest and highest salt flats in the world.
Just thought id share.

Once i get to beunos aires on bike, im flying back to Lima, and headed to Pucallpa where im going to spend a week or 2 hangin´around with a shaman a trust worthy friend is putting me in contact with.
(3 day trip up the amazon on a river boat!)..
May stay at a krsna commune in Lima for a bit practicing yoga and sustainability and practicing spanish my spanish before heading the jungle..
I must admit, my spanish is terrible - i really need to hang out with someone that speaks both languages, in practical situations to learn more. I can conjugate verbs and make basic requests, but my comprehension is nil.

Left with 5800 and a one way plane ticket already purchased (800 bucks including bike).. spent about 1200 on equipment (including; bike, stove, bike bags, water filter, new tent, soloist cook set, goretex jacket.)
I left april 16th and reckon ill return in late July with lots of money left over.
NOT buying tours, or busses/airplane travel saves sooo much money. I am living off less than $15 dollars a day on the bike, and thats eating out for 2 or 3 meals a day and staying in hostels. Closer to $9 if i camp...
(however, wild camping is difficult in Peru.. because people live and work on ALL of the land, finding a covert spot is very difficult.)
Meals here - desayuno, almuerzo, and cena are all set menu or maybe 2 choices - for 2.5sols (about a dollar give or take depending when) you get.. soup, rice, some lettuce and tomato, bread, a meat course, maybe a roll, cafe or mate...
Either way.. its always a real good deal, i eat ALOT and am full off one of these meals.
Hostels out of the tourist areas are generally 10 sols, but in bolivia can be as cheap as 50 cents american, same with a meal..
Prices go up a dollar or so in Argentina, and another couple dollars in Chile..
Even if you do travel by bus (combi) or taxi´s its very cheap.. but economic travel is uncomfortable, and extremely impersonal.
I am so glad i brought my bike after riding 22hours on a luxury bus showing american action films and running children on bicycles and animals off the road...
If you have more specific questions please ask. The best piece of advice i received was: Just fucking do it man, yoú´ll have the time of your life, the hardest part is leaving.
Ive always wanted to do something like this, and held any and all travellers in high regard. I can now hold myself in the same regard, and now.. a month in (5 days really, independant on the bike).. im fuckin´proud of myself - the thing is, now its just casual..
Set up the tent, or hit the hostel, research your route, write in the journal.. and wake up, feel great, and explore new territory.

Just found out now i brought the usb cord for the wrong camera + ive already sent home a couple hundreds fotos on cd from cuzco.
However, to prove that infact i am in south america, here is me at Machu picchu:

Currently in Copacabana Bolivia and everything is very cheap.. I am staying in a restored colonial building, with a big window overlooking a courtyard, a crappy continental breakfast, 2 beds, shower w. electric head, and cable tv for 6.49 american a nite.
I just had an awesome steak dinner in a hip restaurant filled with psychedelic art work, and awesome music rotation. Came with salad bar (very good, many vegetables, mashed potatos, and thick mozza cheese sauce + a grande cerveza) 7 bucks!
La paz tommorow.

that rocks. very beautiful.
now im thinking of doing what your doing instead of buying a car for around $9000.
i have nothing to lose. no friends, no girlfriend, my family doesn't keep in touch, i hate my life, it's going in no direction, i want to die...i should do it.
you say a bike saves you a lot of money?
how long do you plan to do this for?
would it be possible for a person to work down there, or is it more of an inexpensive vacation?
i want to travel/work for years and years...probley like 5 or so and then return.

I took this trip as a variation on your reasons LayYouIn.
If your serious about comming to South America and living the nomadic life, i recommend either being an artesan (very openminded and easy to make friends with.) or learning spanish fluently and going through the beauracracy with whatever country you want to work in, before comming.
I found the footprints south american handbook 07 to cover EVERYThing id wonder..
Unless you are very into biking, and highly commited to masochistic rides and reasonably researched, prepared and headstrong - i would not recommend a bike - i am finding it very prohibitive in many respects.. always being preoccupied with it, bound to it.. BUT it totally has its benefits..
For example - i am sick and have been since i started, felt really sick in copacabana stayed an extra night to try and sleep it off. Started off 10am with a 19km climb that took about an hour and a half up STEEP road, starting from an altitude above 3800m. It sucked completely... Then pulling into the next town, my rack broke and now i am SOL most likely, unless i order gear from north america or bus around to major cities until i find what i need...
I am cycling more as a rite of passage and as a reinvigoration of self, after a medicore past few years. Cycling is not directed by the savings incurred.
In south america there are 3 or 4 different types of busses... Luxury double decker mercedes (affordable by western standards), chicken busses that carry the locals from town to town (along with their animals, screaming children, etc - unreliable and uncomfortable), and Combi´s which are vans with about 15 seats in them and roof racks. (Always overfull, loud, and they drive insane passing on blind corners constantly..)... and taxis which are usually fair priced if you know how to dicker.
Anyways, i caught a combi for 112kms for 15 bolivianos today after my bike broke. thats about $2.10...
IF YOU ARE CONCERNED with cost, there is a definate economico backpackers circuit you can tap into.. with meals and hostels for less than a buck...
Work down here seems mosly pointless unless as a social network. The wages are soooo low by american standards.. i couldn´t justify working in a restaurant or call centre, or hotel for the equivalent of 2 or 3 dollars an hour...
Learn spanish before you comeª
Me.. im probably only going to last on the bike till mid to late June and then head to the jungle on foot, and reclaim festival season and adventures with friends back in Canada for late July till september. Up in the air after that.. possibly upgrading and leisure courses in a small progressive community.. or possibly wintering in Central America and living with a spanish family for next to nothing, studying spanish.
Anyways - i think many people want to travel, and many people are too apprehensive to follow through. Thats BS, do it! everytime i up and leave and change my life in a big scary way - its always the best thing ever!

¡Que bueno! I am impressed. And a bit envious! Can't wait to see some more pictures when they are available.
My friends and I have a trip in the works, laterally across South America from Chile to Brazil. This summer just had too many good jam shows all up n' down the north american coast... So we're aiming for 2009. Keep sharing your experience with us! Your tips are well appreciated.
Greetings from Southern California!
