small refridgerator for dunking, been in storage, question
    #8410217 - 05/16/08 04:54 PM (4 months, 26 days ago)

greeting, i have just taken a small refridgerator out of storage to use for my dunks, 1) cause i dont have room in mine 2) its safer this way

anyhow it had alot of mold in it cause its been in storage for 4 years, so i bleached the hell out of it, i put a half gallon of bleach in a spray bottle, and soaked it, scrubbed it, soaked it again now its sitting there, think that it will be okay to use now ? no more visible signs of mold

anyhow im going to dunk 12 cakes in there tonight, then roll them in the morning, then stick them in my new fruiting chamber :-)

the fridge should be fine

but read up on dunking, you will find many people suggest 'cold shocking' is a method that is useless for cubensis, others say its effective.

i dont plan on using a fridge, just gonna dunk in cool water, and let sit in a cool room.

the cold is not for 'shocking', it's because mold, bacteria, and such don't do well in the cold.

yea i understand that contams are less likly to be around a cold environment.. but if your cake is fully colonized and strong you should have no worry for contams becuz fully colonized cakes are very resistant to contams..

but still there is something people refere to as 'cold shocking'.. in the fridge with dunk n roll.. look it up.. im no pro so i cant really give you the full explanation, but ive read about it, some people suggest it, others dont..

I know dunking in cold water serves the purpose of reducing the chances of getting some contams. But since the cakes are colonized I wonder if it would be more beneficial to dunk in room temp water? I have always used cold water because it was recommended, but it is probably just a theory.

I think the principle behind cold shocking is that it simulates mother nature telling the Myc it is almost winter, so it better fruit while it can. Something like that anyway.

cold shocking is a common method used to initiate pinning on various species but not for cubes as they don't require or necessarily even benefit from cold shocking

I agree that once the cakes are fully colonized the risk of contamination is virtually non-existent during the dunking process assuming clean water and conditions are provided. I don't believe dunking in the refrigerator is worth while for cubes. However, I also don't think it would hurt.

I think I will dunk some of my cakes in room temp water and the others in cold, just to see if there is any real difference.

How you feeling man? If it weren't late I would eat some mush. I have some shit that I grew 2 years ago. I took it for a test drive last week, and it kicked my ass. I have to get up early, so it probably isn't a good idea.

That is funny as hell. When I was coming down from my last trip I ate a bunch of leftover Chinese food.
